SnowenOutThere
Around 3.1 according to nearby gauges in Charlottesville, probably had some upslope enhancement, and there are still puddles on the side streets. Home gauge in NOVA shows a respectable 2.9 inches of rain as well. Do wonder if this storm bears as a forewarning of what we might expect this winter if we get more inland storm tracks due to a warmer baroclinic boundary pushing inland. I wouldn’t read too much into this event since it had tropical origins, but either way I’m glad we’re getting more rains and that the heaviest was along the piedmont and mountains. I wouldn’t be surprised to see qpf fields like this throughout the winter. Could be a big year for the ski resorts, and mostly rain for the lowlands outside of (maybe) a well timed storm with cold air. 2 1

With a snow map you can reasonably chalk a localized snow hole to the urban heat island, but I always wonder what causes the localized DC rain hole? Here's a graphic with the final estimates from the event. This makes a lot more sense for your area.
