Honestly cannot remember the last time I have gotten that kind of amount. That first storm thundered for close to an hour. It caused a lot of flooding all over Frederick. Got word that the local farm where I get my CSA and plants they had about 5” of standing water on the grounds and in the green houses.

Looks like another chance for storms today. It looks like the good stuff stays in the mountains. I'm glad to see some nice weather starting Sunday. I've gotten behind of a couple weather dependent projects.

Not sure on totals from yesterday's storm.  Prince fred Mesonet says 0.28" but at my place about 2mi north you wouldn't surprise me if you said I got 2.8".  It dumped here for a while and was very heavy.  Way more than a quarter inch.  There must've been some cutoff shenanigans or something.

There was a sharp cut-off there. The Red X is where the Prince Frederick mesonet site is. It got the short end of the stick.

3k NAM has a neat cyclonic feature near Kentucky that lasts all Sunday.

Rainfall over the last week.  A lot of us in the 1-2.5" range, with some big winners near Frederick, Manassas, Dulles, and Martinsburg.  As has been tradition this year, DC itself, southern DE, and Stephens City did poorly. 

Airport totals continue to diverge (year-to-date total, departure):

DCA:  14.71", -6.94" 

IAD:  21.95", -0.81" 

BWI:  18.45", -3.94"

Augusta County is mostly green and growing.

 My lawn looks quite lush and green for nearly mid July.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has not changed since June 1 and keeps Augusta in Severe to Extreme Drought.   Truly amazing.

Here is how those determinations are made: https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/About/AbouttheData/DroughtClassification.aspx.  Summer rainfall does not generally help relieve longer term drought conditions that are dictated by year-on-year water budgets but can help sustain vegetation over the short term.

Thank you!  I do appreciate your interest in this.

I have followed the Drought Monitor closely for years and have had faith in its veracity until in recent months.

I closely monitor water and soil conditions for some rather large agricultural interests, both topsoil and underground water table.

Back in late February when our Augusta water table was 21 ft. below normal, the U.S. Drought Monitor placed Augusta in moderate drought.  In late June when our water table had recovered to only 2 ft. below normal after a very wet May, the drought Monitor placed us in severe to Extreme Drought.  Go figure

On May 19, Augusta was all extreme. Northern Va. was all severe.

On June 30, most of northern Va. down to central Rockingham had been downgraded to moderate drought.  Augusta was and remains in severe to extreme.

I can no longer trust the U.S. Drought Monitor as a reliable source of information.
