Record high minimum of 74F tied at Dulles Airport yesterday. A record high minimum of 69F was tied at Elkins, W. Va. for the second consecutive day. The urban heat contaminated records at DCA and BWI barely register the warmth.

we've mostly stayed above 75F for an extended period of time.

I was driving from Hunt Valley to my girlfriend's farm in Fallston at 6 pm yesterday when the storm blew up.  Absolutely harrowing drive, the rainfall rates were ridiculous and almost continuous ponding on the roadways.  Trees down on the way etc. Lightning was quite a show.  The rain gauge at the farm I set up a few months ago recorded 1.92" as of 8:00 pm last night in the preceding 24 hours - I think about 1.4" of that in the storm from 6:00 - 8:00.

Just under 7 inches of rain at the farm there since we set up the gauge in mid-May. Been really nice for the flowers (that's her crop - cut flowers for sale direct to individuals and flower shops). The zinnias are absolutely exploding right now, as are the dahlias.

Flood Watch #5 in the last 30 days was issued for Augusta County at 8:07 am.

With the first 4, I only averaged .29" per Watch.

Hopefully, #5 will yield pay dirt.

Spotty, but slow moving and intense storms today. Once again, I believe the watch is justified.

Weird how people are fired up over the watch issuance thing - all it does is let me know that if the area I am in has a storm set up over it, I need to be cautious when travelling out and about over the possibility of high water.  That's helpful as hell, to distinguish the danger of heightened localized flooding chances from any given pop up storm in this set-up versus other times when you don't need to worry as much about that from pop up storms.

I know it was nice to have that tucked in the back of my head as I drove in the deluge last night - I was cautious as hell approaching low spots in the road near creeks to make sure that there was not pooling water in those areas.

So wanted to check into the rain and lack of rain here.

May 2025 monthly total was 10.04"

June 2025 monthly total was 5.36"

July 2025 to date total is 1.03”

July last year the monthly total was 1.25” and then August I had 7.67”. I have currently started noticing the tree line behind my house and some leaves are turning yellow. So even with all that rain we got in May the lack of a decent deluge between June 28th and today is showing. I am hoping that the rest of July we at least get something and that August ramps back up again. Mind you this is in my area in SW Frederick Co. I know just recently the NE side of the county had that day where a cell sat and just dumped rain. But the measurable rain in my area is really lacking.

I just noticed that I’ve been under a couple of these watches and haven’t had much, if any, rain. It is a remarkably humid pattern and I know that when it rains, it can torrent, but think it’s ultimately been more sporadic than a watch should justify. Today seems more ripe.

Yesterday was absolutely more ripe. I do think they’ve been too liberal with the FF Watches recently, but yesterday needed one and it worked out. I’ve been so busy at work these past few months. Can’t wait for my 2+ week vacation in 9 days. Just a set of 7 night shifts stand in the way of me and freedom

Well, let's see how day four goes. Previous three I've had thunder and lightning for hours only to get a few sprinkles. The thunder restarted about 20 minutes ago. I think we were moved to the desert SW the last 4 days lol. Currently 83.1/73.3 with clouds and thunder after an 86.6 high about an hour ago.

Very similar story a handful of miles to your south in Leesburg.

9.42" in May

3.17" in June

1.34" so far in July

I know it'll turn around at some point, but it's been wild watching almost every storm blow up to our south and east over the past month. Even stuff that's looked good on approach from the west has died just before arriving and then ramped back up to my east.

The stuff that builds to the West and you just know it will hit the mountains and go poof. It is the reason I have replaced most of my perennials with drought tolerant plants. My sedums have done amazing the last two years.

Our areas are almost carbon copies.

It really is interesting. As I sit over in VA currently at 8 at night because that is the only time during the day my kid can ride safely

I sit here once again and look to the South and see the cloud tops that are just that too far away

as the sweat runs down my back

And the dust from the riding ring hangs in the air
