CAPE
Snow has melted off the outdoor furniture, some on the roof, and on the deck. Not so much on the frozen ground. Still full coverage around 5" most places.

Heat pump not working so hard and I dont need to start a fire to keep it from running constantly. Kinda liking this. I have the spray foam insulation, i need the AC on today. I have 6" log outer walls- R value isnt the best but not as relevant because of the high thermal mass(heat storing capability).

87storms
Took my old Roscoe 6 out for a spin (it’s got the knobby tires). Sidewalks are mostly cleared but not the bike lanes. This glacier is dense material and should be studied.
Fozz
I’m in Maryland until the weekend, so I had the chance to explore this glacier yesterday and early today, and it really was just like Feb 2007. It was rock solid, very slippery, easy to skid on, and you needed very good balance to even try venturing through the glacier. I measured around 6” depth as of this morning. And it had this very shiny glow especially under light that you rarely ever see normally. It’s been 19 years since I’ve last seen anything like this so you can say it’s rarer than a HECS. Not to mention, the Inner Harbor is partially frozen along with so many other bodies of water. The fun is ending with today’s warmer temps, but this was a hell of a run.

adelphi_sky
If this were in the summer, wouldn't this be a mini drought with less than .1" of precipitation?Since the January storm?

A good amount of the region is under severe drought or moderate drought per the US Drought Monitor. USGS river gaging stations are also showing below normal discharge. WEATHER53
Going back to 11/27/25 when first cold shit hit thru yesterday, 60 of those 75 days have been at or below average . Three -20 departures DCA and many double digits. I could not find a colder 7 day in 1977 than this year. 1977 blew away about every other cold record

kgottwald
Temperature rose overnight, 46 at Dulles. But apparently that's going to be the high as we have a NW wind. The new AFD format is complete ass. It doesn't talk about today's weather at all, just a phantom winter storm and upslope snow. I don't live in the mountains and I don't care about their weather! I want to know about factors affecting MBY!

It still gives off a sheen when the light reflects off it. It's so smooth and the minor undulations can be noticed when you look at it more intently. That storm will be remembered forever in these parts. As for the weather this morning, balmy in the mid-40s when I left the house. Felt really nice actually. 3

But most of the lawn is still probably 5”+ depth. Just walked on it though to refill the bird feeder and I broke through the crust with nearly every step.

Terpeast
(Source: CWG WaPo) This winter deserves high marks just for this reason alone. I know I know, frustrating tracking season and tons of teeth gnashing over near misses… but the snow/ice cover and duration of cold is impressive. With how much I have on the ground now, still 4-5”, I’m making a run for 21 days 4

It's difficult in an urban area to get a good spot far from the heat from the house and out of the sunlight. Thinking about hanging it on the north facing side of the tree int he front yard. But my thermo has been as much as 6 degrees off at times.

Basically, can you separate the event itself from the “aftermath”? Everyone wants a Jan ‘16 storm with a Jan ‘26 freeze, but in the end, which combo (big snow/melt, modest snow/freeze) is your favorite?

I was wondering if we were going to start a tracker for the forum on snowpack. If I had a choice, I would definitely choose a 5 inch snowpack that lasted for weeks with the chance of additional snow cover than a 12 inch storm with a washout in three days followed by 50s. My front yard is facing due north and I have 5 foot ice mounds from the plows which should hang around until March if we don't get a big rainstorm with temps in the 50s.
