Oof, look at IAH right now. 104°F/70°F.  :axe:

I bet a certain poster on here would love to be there right now.

Anyway, I nice little rain earlier with 0.95" with a decent line of downpours just to my wes. The grass is already perking up again.

I think Kevin would enjoy this 2 am ob:

I'm sure he would love looking at his thermometer from his air conditioned house. In fact, he could get the same level of enjoyment by looking at PWS reports online.

Davis uses a Watermark soil sensor...the value is in cb (centibars) and represents the force the plant's roots has to exert to extract water from the soil. 0cb is completely saturated and 200cb is bone dry. Anything over 100cb tends to be very dry. Usually you want it between 25-50cb.

So 6" at 10cb and 12" at 103cb tells you the sfc is near saturation, but a foot down is fairly dry. Of course these sensors need to be calibrated every Spring or else they start to go wacky. I haven't pulled mine since installing it in 2007 and most of the time it is flatlined at 200cb (unless it's so wet that the sensor begins to flood). I think the soil pulls away from it after the ground compresses around it in the winter. In winter, it will read 200cb once the ground freezes.

Hope that helps.

So what today's readings basically show is that the rains from yesterday moistened the top couple to 6 inches , but below that still very dry? So I'd guess after this evaporates today we'll see the 6 inch depth go back to higher cb each day this week?

Theoretically, sure. Some of that may continue to seep down to 12" as well. My 6" soil temp is 69F right now and on a typical sunny day it only fluctuates 5F diurnally. So the effects of solar and RH still take some time to influence 6". It's those top few inches that see the greatest swings.
