We're taking a second look at the house in Ashfield tomorrow to determine if we want to sell one pit to buy another.  It would give me better elevation but still not too great (1300' vs. only 1000' now).

If I leave home tomorrow in the rain and it's snowing up there, that will certainly put a mark in the "plus column".

Didn't want to clutter the storm thread with a MBY question - but I was thinking of going to Waterville Valley tomorrow morning. Does it look like snow up there? I've never been so I know nothing of the area - but I have free passes. Where will the flip be on 93 so I know how much time to budget for my drive?

Thanks

This winter sucks

Imagine if this board was around in the 1980s? Would be a pile of jumpers a mile high every year.

Not that this is surprising, but looking at the top 57 NESIS storm list and comparing 1980-1990 vs the past 10 years is kind of mind boggling.

NESIS storms in top 57:

1980-1990--5

2005-2015-26

Been a pretty decent run I guess :)

One way to recover from the addiction to snow is to move to Florida. I'm slowly coming around in my thinking.

Which is better: Shovelling, bundling up in layers, No bikinis?

Or: Swimming, Fishing, BBQing, working on a bronze tan, most of all bouncing beauties abound?

LMAO :P

I'm working on that, as much as I love the snow, I can't stand the cold.  We'll be down there at some point, probably in about 4 years.

There are very few houses available in MA above 1500' unless you want to live in Savoy - Heath - Florida MA.

To cash in on some of those tight QPF gradients from coastals you need to head east to an elevation location in N. Leverett or Shutesbury or Petersham/New Salem.

I kind of disagree on this.  In terms of number of unites you are correct, but that's more a function of population than anything else  But, there are a number of towns where these are found if you're wililng to live in them (I am).  Just in Franlin County,

Charlemont

Colrain

Hawley

Heath

Ashfield

Plainfield

Goshen

Similar number of towns in Hampshire County.

There's plenty of land that high if you want to build.

As a forester, I've no interest in a place where stinging/biting critters are active year round.  On field trips in Maine that include folks from up & down the East Coast, one can discern geographic origins by lunchtime behavior.  The NNE types sit on the nearest log or rock while the southerners stand around and look uncomfortable, hoping the chiggers, fire ants, etc. don't find them.

The skeeters and flies up north are brutal though.

Respectfully the Yankee in me is ingrained. The thinking of whether it was a good or bad move is a forgone conclusion. The move was by accident caused by health, employment and forced to retire. It took a year to find the property. Disappointed in that it's not Montana. The house is a 2,000 sq/ft log home- tongue and groove sitting on 2 acres right in the middle of the Ocala National Forest. Admittedly the summers are brutal but one can't beat the winter weather. The appeal of shoveling due to the fact of being physically  unable is no longer entertained. The first month I moved in had a stare down with a 300lb Black Bear, ah, he won. At any given time I can look skyward and spot an eagle or two. The only fear of being down here are the gators and lightning. Odds of being in a Cane have increased 100 fold, kind of enjoy the severe weather... can't wait. Just today had a nice squall line pass threw. I'll get more severe threats in a year then a Blizzard. Anyway if I want snow now all I have to do is get on a plane equally live vicariously through the forum. Always has been the thrill of the chase and not the event itself.
