MN Transplant
18 minutes ago, wasnow215 said: I have a question for a meteorologist or a veteran on here who would know. Why does the GFS model and I think other others show plain rain at hour 18 (or whatever it would be on a particular model depending on when it came out), but surface temperatures are squarely still in the 20s for almost the whole state except for near the ocean, at that time? I know the icons doesn't differentiate but GFS does. I'm not seeing any plain rain on the GFS except for over east of the Bay. Sometimes the error isn't the model itself but how the individual providers display it.

Nah man...that crap is like trying to shovel concrete off of the concrete! At least with this it's soft underneath so you perhaps you don't have pound the ground as much.

ErinInTheSky
6" of snow, cleared off around 8:00 AM Now 1" of sleet on the snow board. Just cracked the 1" mark.
MN Transplant
Still just 14.4°. It looks like I got another 0.5" from that mix between 7-8:30am before going over to full sleet. So, sitting at about 5.8", with 5.5" snow and 0.3" sleet. One thing, as everyone has noticed, is that the sleet is very dry. I'm guessing that the depth of the cold layer helped to completely refreeze the sleet without some of the residual "softness" that normally makes it sticky. Might end up being beneficial for travel over the next few days, ZR-dependent.
WxUSAF
@wxmvpete spot on here with NAM getting the mix timing pretty well. But under doing precip before changeover.
Terrapinwx
Hrrr trending colder at the surface. Morning runs had along the bay getting above freezing this afternoon but now is not forecast to get above 30. Hoping this means mid levels have trended cooler too and we can fend off freezing rain until the dry slot .
WVclimo
Just got back from a 6-mile hike with my son. Just in time, because heavy sleet has moved in. 7° on top of the mountain, west of Hedgesville. 13° here. Wiped 6.5” off the snow board from this morning. Sleet is accumulating nicely now.
paxpatriot
Measured 6.5 inches here but we are starting to hear pingers with rates dropping. Would be nice to get back to snow, so we’ll see. Anything less than 8 inches is a bust at this point. Still only 14.4F.

You need cohesion between flakes. That's why warm snow is best. Sleet just falls apart. stormy
Finished blowing sleet about 15 minutes ago. It was too heavy for the plow. Approaching 6 inches, 3 inches snow. 2.8" sleet. HRRR predicting .50" zr from 2 - 7. Still 10 degrees.

clskinsfan
A bit over 8 inches in my hood. Been a mix of sleet and snow for a couoke of hours. Which is weird. Normally once you mix its over. But its still stacking up here. Shoveling is serious work with this stuff. And of course its cold as shit. Snow/sleet 11.8 degrees 1
gunny23
Just finished our driveway and neighbors. We went northern lights chasing in Tromso Norway last christmas so I had my "Arctic Gear" on. Clothes were soaking wet when I was done and that was with removing a layer. Need to just wear a tshirt and shorts under my jacket for second pass later today. TSSN+
Still 9 degrees here with sleet and snow needles and freezing fog. It’s nasty out there.
Rhino16
Decent rate freezing rain right now but it’s been fluctuating in intensity. I think temps are close to freezing but just slightly below? I woke up late so measured 1 & 1/8” of snow/sleet/ice. Local station at 30, but that’s south across the river. edit: seeing 31s pop up now so the changeover to plain rain may be close.

SolidIcewx
Went on my Jeb walk. The sleet is impressive. Coming from the Great Lakes area ive never seen sleet like this and at such low temps. Climo here is very intriguing to say the least.

But if you look between our hr 12 and 18 on the 12z GFS that just came out, it definitely shows just plain rain as far as what the model is which I didn't understand.
