Great write up in the varsity thread @MillvilleWx! I think the cold temps during and after the storm are going to low key be really surprising and impactful. Just zero melting.

Sounds like you enjoy it and it's part of your weenie-ing out vs just a sense of duty, which I respect haha  I like being out in it, too, but walking and stuff more so than shoveling

I agree. We are going to flip last. Concerned about the glacier that is coming after the snow though. It's going to be a mess.

I’m actually going to be due east to Martinsburg by about 6 miles or so east of Martinsburg in the hills outside the interstate. This area may just stay all snow, but it will be close! I’m excited because a snow storm with friends is so much fun. We are planning a menu for food and cocktails too. It’ll be a great time. Let’s bring this one home!

I've got a flat roof (with internal drainage) that I can't really access myself, though trying to get up there on a ladder would be kind of fun, in a very stupid way.

A week+ of pressure from 10" of snow + ice seems bad! The resulting melt would almost certainly cause tons of pooled water trapped under the ice cap. Anybody in this region ever deal with this? I know you can get gouged if you wait until its an emergency to schedule snow removal. I'm just a dummy here and most of my roof knowledge comes from yesterday, on ChatGPT, so keep that in mind.

So went digging around. These photos are from the January 25th 2016 storm. First one is my oldest standing on top of the snow with a road sign. The second is our street coming in. Remember they had to have small front end loaders and dump trucks to clear a path.

Thankfully today’s temps don’t matter lol. Just like how we drop 5 degrees colder before a system and think that will help the storm stay colder longer and then the clouds roll in and it shoots up to 32 lol

Just did a grocery store run. Mind you it is my normal run for the week as we just needed food. Aldi was a zoo at 9 am. My other store of choice is our local Co-op and it was nice and quiet. Have a Giant pick up order in for an 11-12 pick up time and I still have not heard from them yet to pick up. Hoping in the next 10-15 min as I have the HVAC folks stoping in to check the Humidifier on the house with a 12-4 time slot.

For the metros, I am hoping that if we do get a good deal of sleet it to some extent mirrors what happened on the Valentine's Day 2007 storm. @psuhoffmanhas referenced this storm, saying that our totals could end up pretty similar to what happened north of here in the central PA area. I was there at the time, a senior in high school. The 2007 storm as I understand it was mostly sleet in the immediate DC area. But not up north. 

 

I remember it like yesterday, man I am old. It was supposed to be senior skip day. My cool friends skipped school, but myself and my loser friends went to our first class, which was AP calculus. Our teacher naturally gave a quiz on senior skip day, that one was not allowed to make up if you missed school lol. It was a missed forecast and call for school by the district, because by the time we were done with our first class at 9:00 a.m., it was already accumulating snow in the parking lots. And on the streets. The snow came in hot and heavy, and the district called an early dismissal. I remember huge accumulating flakes. Myself and other seniors, respecting the rest of skip day, had simply walked out the door after the calculus quiz, times were different back then I guess.

By noon the roads were awful and later in the day it started to change to sleep. We probably got about 8 in of snow, and then the sleet began. It was a glacier of sleet that completely crushed over the snow. It was extremely glittery and sparkly the next morning. And the roads were a disaster. Basically, there were two two tire ruts in each lane, where the glacier had been pounded through. The rest of the road surface was glacierized. Plows were useless. My school district canceled school the rest of the week, IIRC, which was extremely uncommon for Central PA. The only time that had happened otherwise was PD2. It was very challenging to walk around the rest of that week lol. Very cold February.

I wish I had pictures, but that was back before people were really carrying. Camera phones. Probably have some lost on an SD card or an old hard drive...

While I am digging the idea of what is to come for our area, I am mindful of how devastating this is going to be for our southern neighbors. And not to get political, but this will be the first real test of FEMA after all the changes that came last year. Let's hope they are up to the task.

First test for a new state admin as well. We'll see how it goes.

It sucks to waste all this cold air on this. I don’t think I’ve been able to track a successful winter storm since I started having an interest in this field, so I have no clue what to look for aside from textbooks and stuff. It really helps me to have experienced it before.
