Major Hurricane Melissa - 892mb - 185mph Jamaica landfall

Do you guys think it will weaken significantly before hitting Cuba? It’s moving awfully fast now and Jamaica is rather narrow, to the point that the Northern eye wall will reemerge rather quickly after landfall.

Can't say I've seen a storm meandering/ sit in the same region for days, to then have the ability to keep strengthening, those waters must be very warm fairly deep down? Not really familiar with that part of the world climate etc

Second recon circled while the first one spent extra time in the eye.

Now looks to be heading in for a fix before landfall.

I believe she will have other factors that will help it to weaken, shear, would be the biggest one amongst other things.

Yes. Very warm deep down. *Barry White voice*.... But seriously, deepest 26°C isotherm in the Atlantic is consistently in the western Caribbean around Jamaica and the Caymans.

Weaken some - yes. It will still be a major hurricane when it hits Eastern Cuba. Cuba too is in serious trouble. Santiago de Cuba and the southeast/east are steep mountains rising to 6500ft +.  20+ inches of rain and cat 3+ winds will cause extreme damage. There are not worse places for a storm like this to hit. Two of the poorest and most mountainous regions of the Carribean.

These numbers are insane. Hurricane Josh checked in a couple of hours ago, said he is keeping an eye on things, ready to move to a safer place if need be.

With 180mph winds at ground level, I can only imagine how bumpy this ride is in to Melissa at flight level. Looks like the eyewall is just starting to come onshore.

185mph is absolutely insane. To think that this is landfalling at this strength at 892mb. What other storms landfalled at this strength? The labor day hurricane in 1935 comes to mind but I can't really think of anything else

strengthen with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h).The 
minimum central pressure has fallen to 892 mb (26.34 inches) based 
on NOAA and Hurricane Hunter Air Force Reserve aircraft data.

1935 Labor Day was the strongest ever Atlantic landfalling hurricane, by pressure, at 892mb. This will tie or surpass that.

This is just…. Wow as it’s on final approach to land. Don’t want to add clutter but really hope these people in the direct path have a way to get to safety.

We probably have 1-2 hours of official advisories before landfall. This is likely going to take the throne as #1 on record in pressure and perhaps wind speed for our basin.
