Yea, I hear ya. A good place to check real time tide guages and overlay them against predicted tides is on the USGS sites. Every location, obviously will be different based on fetch, stage of tide, orientation, etc...

But, ill tell ya this... water levels in the back of barnegat bay are actually running slightly lower right now. Im actually getting ready to head out on the water for work now. Until late last night, we hadn't yet had any easterly flow since the previous NE blow. Infact, we has northwesterlies and SW.

Nevertheless, spring tides only generally exacerbate the tidal flooding 10-15 percent. That 10-15 percent can make all the difference in the world though with a long duration easterly blow, especially with a strong or stalled system inside of the benchmark.

Hoping we get more of a scraper, as im not necessarily enthusiastic about working vessel salvages 24/7 during and after the storm. Still approximately 60-70 percent of vessels are in the water for the fall run/locals summer. Towards the end of the season, bilge pumps and batteries on ignored vessels are often not working.

Not changing this headline. Am not thinking any different-likely not worse than posted. Will adjust this as an OBS thread tomorrow.

BUT... if anything, am not seeing the kind of phaser that was implied approaching thread post time (740PM Wed eve). Ensembling suggests the Great Lakes closed low short wave is tracking a little too far northeast to completely phase with the southern trough... instead a weaker wet windy scenario with impacts but certainly no greater than the thread headline.

There is still time for the worst case coastal hugger scenario but am thinking that this won't be quite as alarming... welcomed rain, a few power outages and certainly moderate coastal flooding for 1 to possibly 3 high tide cycles. While major is still possible, I think less chance of major than what I saw 2 days ago. Again... still a problem for the involved coastal communities. On tidal predictions: when you look at the various model predictions, the GEFS suite is worst, and associated with the more closer coastal hugger scenario.

I now have to consider the NAM/EPS/ECAI scenarios of a little further east (00z/10 cycle trends)

On tides: am not sure why a few folks are saying astronomically large departures---NOT TRUE. We're out of the full moon phase. Someone please clarify.

So, a decent storm but unless modeling changes... am not changing headline as written and presuming everyone has enough information to plan/avoid/mitigate the coming adverse impacts.

Yes, we're definitely out of the full moon phase. At least that's something certain while the models still try to refine things.

The "first call" hype machine is just a byproduct of social media and sensationalism in the modern era. While those who understand the complexity of forecasting, grasp how quickly model runs change... The general public does not. The general public just reads worst case scenarios on social media.

Tides are not running high, most boats are still in the water, and this is likely going to be a glancing early season blow. Phone has been ringing off the hook about "storm prep." My answer as always: put some extra lines on, put fenders out as necessary, and keep up to date on any changes.

It still looks like this will be a weaker version of the October 2017 nor'easter. Heaviest rains will be 1"-3"/2"-4" with some locally higher amounts possible and winds gusting to 40 mph maybe near 60 mph in a few spots (not widespread). 2017 had far more widespread damaging winds and heavier rains. The PNS from that storm, which underwent bombogenesis (not likely this time around) is below:

I really don't remember many coastal storms the past decade+ that held a track for days, balloons or not. The models do this song and dance pretty much every single time. It is not a new thing.

I don't know, think about winter. We most of the time with a coastel we don't know if we are getting 1-3, 3-6 or 4-8 within a few hours before a storm hits. Most of the time it is because of the track Look over all these threads. With rain it is no different, but most the general public won't know the difference between .50" and 1.5" since the forecast said rain and it did rain.

can't trust the NAM past 60 hours but here is the total qpf most of which still falls past 60 hours

12z NAM as others have said previously this page: Heavy qpf is slated for our NYC subforum, especially e PA/NJ/LI..wind driven pelting rain. 12z NAM is more of a hugger so that can change but what I noted in that cycle... 7H FGEN shift northward well up into central New England Monday. They are going to get some decent mid level rain.

I'm trying to attach the 850MB FGEN LOOP. Note a couple things: 850 FGEN trying to get sct showers going se NYS/NJ Saturday and then the big dump from 66hours on to 84 hrs... nearly stationary decent 850 MB FGEN with 70KT 850 MB easterly inflow band... no wonder spot nearly 8" near Toms River.

Modeling will change but if indeed the 850 and 7H low are passing across the Delmarva...we get hit hard. Just want to make sure it doesn't fritter eastward. vertically stacked lows Delmarva to s NJ/s of LI are our sweet spot with heaviest qpf often spilling further nw than modeled.

Now lets see what future cycles will offer as well as other modeling.

We'll have to watch over the next day or so if the models chasing convection to the NE of the main low are real or convective feedback. Models sometimes do it at this range only to consolidate it as we get close, and sometimes it makes that area the main low and robs all dynamics of the main storm.

All options still on the table, but I'm leaning towards a milder event.

The low isn't so far east on the rgem. Its just weak without a lot of heavy rain outside of LI and the immediate coast

I was referring to the area of convection over SE New England. Those often rob the dynamics of the low. RGEM therefore destroys the Boston area.

Inland places that were getting 2 to 4" 2 days ago are getting nothing now. I don't know what to expect at this point but betting on the wraparound rarely works out

"Potentially" powerful Nor'easter Sun-Mon 10/12-13/25 with needed rain-especially south of I84, and fairly high impact sct coastal gusts 50+ MPH and possibly moderate or greater coastal flooding at the midday Sun and Monday high tide cycles.
