I use a fertilizer service. They came yesterday to put down Dimension.   They're the best on the South Shore, waiting list to get on as a customer.  I can't believe how late they put down preemergent every year but it works.  I know a lot of other people put it down almost a month earlier.

Last year, we had a large area we were transitioning from 100% grass/weeds to rougly 75% shrubs and perennials and 25% grass.

-Sheet mulched (Mow grass as low as possible.  Lay overlapping cardboard, wet it, then top with compost, soil) the entire area late July last year.

-Planted shrubs and perennials in the September. 

-Put down winter or "dormant" grass seed in late October. 

The grass seed just started sprouting a weeks ago. First time trying it, we'll see how it comes in.

But essentially no weeds. I'm convinced sheet mulching is the most effective at turning grass/weeds into new plantable space, with minimal weed regrowth. 

In 6 warm seasons we've turned about 2/3 of the half acre lot from grass into plantable soil.  Lot of work but better for us, pollinators, environment, and property value.

yup there is, but just be patient. it will dry out before you know it 

seriously though, i know you're talking about rainfall, which you obviously can't control. but when not raining, just need to keep it moist

Keeping an eye on temps saturday night sunday morning.  Planted early, but could cover stuff if necessary.  Maybe winds and dews will stay up

Had this whole area of lawn totally redone last year. Brought in loads of topsoil and then they hydro seeded in Napril . Had them back in late Augdewst for an aeration and overseed . And it finally looks like what I have been searching for in that area. Tons of Oaks so a lot of shade and debris disaster. Not a weed. No dandies , no clover .. just deep green grass . It will erode as it’s prone to do in that sloped area and not enough sun. But for this season it is 100% full frontal nudity .

That's insane coverage for what looks like pretty dense shade come full leaf out. Definitely looks good, but like you said will be interested to see it towards Aug/Sept.

I live in the woods … especially the backyard . That’s kind of the side/back yard. When I post about my hatred of Oaks.. that should give a good visual why . I would not be unhappy at all if a huge blowdown of all of those happened . It’s a slope, below a larger slope on the other side of the big flowerbed to the right partially pictured there.. so it’s always a losing battle that I try to fight and maintain
