51, but without the breeze from yesterday so feels so much warmer. God bless having a large deck, put up the baby gate, brought out some toys and bubbles and let the kiddo play outside for a bit. Judging by her squeals she enjoyed it :)

What is it about babies and bubbles?  Ours goes crazy; she loves to chase, pop, and try to bite them.

Finally a few consecutive days this winter during which warmth didn't underperform.

Many non big cold days have overperformed around here at the least. It might be a different story up in the snowpack areas. Not much super warm until this stretch but definitely plenty of days that ended up warmer than expected.

Also, it seems like the cold this week has backed off some, even from a few days ago.

It has .. GFS MEX was two days at or below freezing for DC for a while.. now it's like 2-3 with highs u 30s.  it could be a bit mild.. but i kinda doubt we'll pull a subfreezing day in the immediate metro unless it snows all day or something. but our avg is 50 starting this week.. so it's tough.

This winter has lacked the consistency that marks our truly cold ones....the flow has been way too fast....January 2011 was a warmer January by 1.5 degrees, but had just 1 day above 46 degrees during the 30 day stretch from January 3rd - February 1st...this winter that stretch was colder but we had 13 days above 46.....when it comes down to it we had one impressive 10 day stretch of winter at the end of January and even during that stretch we snuck in a 54....the other cold shot was super impressive but short-lived....The only time we had a real taste of a cold winter was February 4-13 when we got blocking....it was only -5, but we got the feel of a cold winter without disruption...nothing impressive, but solid winter stretch....still 5 days left but will probably fall short of 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11 in terms of cold...certainly the latter 2...at the end it will end up being a snowy winter with a couple very impressive cold shots, but otherwise variable.....a ~ -0.8  on 1981-2010 norms is not a cold winter

I feel like the ice in the Bay was more impressive than any of the years that you listed.  I agree that for the whole, the winter cold was variable, but from early-January to mid February, it was really cold in spite of a few spikes of warmth, no?

eh...not really....from January 11-20 we had the below highs...more than a spike...
