I am surprised that there is not ice on LI Sound.  Last time that I saw that was February 1979 during the week prior to PD1.

There is lots of ice on the protected bays and harbors on the Sound shore

exactly.

0F with 40mph winds:  old chart: -53

0F with 40mph winds:  new chart: -29

-53 sounds much cooler, pun intended.

The old windchill figures always seemed overdone,  but the modern figures seem underdone...

I’ve never sure how it was ever figured out how -30 for example “feels” like in the old and new way. Or on the other hand how 110 feels like. I guess they have to assign a number to how dangerous extreme cold like this or heat is and how humidity and wind speed worsen it.

I read this earlier this winter. It's old so I will probably look for a better source later before bed.

Fun fact

Lake Erie is nearly 96% frozen as of Thursday. With this weekend's Arctic blast, it could reach 100% coverage. The last time this happened was 30 years ago in February 1996 and has ocurred only 3x in modern history.

I'm amazed in 02-03 it did not totally freeze

NYC down to 4 degrees.  3 here with a windchill of -15.

Peeked at MMU (4 dgrees) and MGJ (1 degree) and conditions are pretty uniform across the entire area. Most places are between 0 and 5 degrees.  Highest I saw was Wantagh and AC at 7.  Even Montauk is at 6 degrees. Coldest I saw was Newburgh at -4.  Everyone's windchills are well below zero.
