BCPS emailed to say they are sending devices home with kids today in the event they are out of school for 4 days next week. Kids get 3 actual snow days before virtual learning kicks in.

Better than MCPS who builds exactly 1 (!) snow day into the schedule.  It takes days for them to reopen for 3-4 inches, so why can they never build in an appropriate amount of snow days?

I'm really wondering about MCPS right now. Trying to make a decision of if I'm going to travel next week, but I'll only do it if they shut down school for the week. The potential for 10+" of snow and 3" of sleet make me think its a possibility.

Schools will close or delay for cold these days - of which there will be plenty regardless of a sheet of ice and snow. I find it pretty unlikely most of our wimpier districts have school next week. But tbd

Absolutely!  In the lates 80s had a sleet bomb in Atlanta that produced about 5 inches of sleet.   It’s interesting to watch it poor off roofs, it behaves like a liquid and piles up.

Yep. In the 02/14/2007 storm the sleet ran down the chutes/ravines on Rt 220 between Clifton Forge and Iron Gate and closed the road! It was 3-4 feet deep and took VDOT about 4 hours to get both lanes opened again.

Hate to say it, but I'm beginning to lose interest in this storm. It'll be cool when the snow comes in hot and heavy, but it'll flip during the day on Sunday, which kinda sucks (rather it flip at night if it's going to flip at all). Also doesn't help that we've been tracking this thing for like a week and we've seen such drastic changes for the worse over the last few days.

I'm already looking forward to the next big-dog window, so at least there's that!

I remember in like 2017 we had a sleet storm. Was like 3” snow and 2.5” sleet. That was wild. Literally saw a car drive backwards over a snow rut in the parking lot from the plow and get stuck like a seesaw. If this ends up being 6” snow and 4.5” sleet like NAM don’t undercount how crazy a weather event that will be.

It’s loud, I can tell you that much. Have been through a couple. Friends at college went through VDay 2007 up in PA with 5+” of sleet. They said it sounded like a barrage of BB’s for hours on end hitting the house. Crazy

Will never forget the sleetfest on VD 2007.  It poured sleet all night until morning, and shut down the DMA.  My family and I departed IAD the morning of the 14th to move to Bangkok.  It was rough getting a taxi big enough to carry us from Tysons to IAD, which was closed until late morning.  Our flight to Narita on UA was the first flight that took off after IAD opened the first runway.  There were thousands of people in the terminal, which overflowed with people standing outside.  Was beyond chaotic.

That’s a real boneheaded thing to say..  Your “losing interest “ in a storm that could change how half the country operates for at least a week.
The time it’s flipping has nothing to do with the (time of day ) it’s going to depend on how much it develops on the coast & how much cold are gets pushed away or remains …

Hell nobody really knows what will exactly happen happen yet .lol

Agree. And dont forget the extended cold we are going to have as well. It is going to be here for a long time.

I don't understand why LWX posts this map in 3 different places on their site
https://www.weather.gov/lwx/winter#tab-1
https://www.weather.gov/lwx/winter#tab-2
https://www.weather.gov/lwx/winter#tab-3

mapgen.php?office=LWX&summary=true&pointpreferences=LWX&ptype=prob_sn&product=expected&2026012317

... and they're never the same map. You literally have to click all 3 tabs and look at all 3 versions' timestamp to find the latest one. Why don't they just post the latest one in one spot!?

they show 3 different things.

and not one of them will make a difference as to what happens during the storm.

I just let myself get a bit bummed that it has turned into a 6-10" storm at best but whatever

I think the euro improvement, when taken along with all the rest of the 12z guidance...was more than just noise.  Keep in mind we are not going to see some massive jump every 6 hours from here on it, not on the euro anyways...not this close in.  But the changes I see on the euro are consistent with the changes I saw across the rest of the 12z guidance, so I think even though its an incremental change...its safe to say it's not just noise.

Increment me 6 more times daddy!
