it was in the upper 70s with a dewpoint of 66 when I was out earlier this morning, and currently it's 78/72 with light rain. it's very pleasant out for a change.
I noticed the wind picking up after @WVclimo had said he'd seen very little wind. i think a lot of the damage was from lightning strikes on trees.
there was a lightning strike on a substation very close to the apartment building which lost its roof. I wonder if NWS will send a team to investigate what happened in that part of the city--there was also a very large tree down a block or 2 from the apartment building.
tons of trees down (some from lightning strikes) and power lines yesterday in town.
a senior housing building not too far from me lost its roof: https://wvmetronews.com/2025/07/17/heavy-storms-rip-through-eastern-panhandle-residents-evacuated-from-charles-town-apartment-building/
my house was right on the edge of where the worst damage was and I'm glad it missed me.
another storm has arrived.
also there are trees down all over town from the previous storm, trees into houses across the county, and 2 reports of roof damage (not sure if from wind or trees).
total whiteout of rain outside, tons of thunder, vibrant lightning, and some gusty wnds. finally some rain--and a really close lightning strike that that blipped the power.
the previous storm missed me to the north, but that line is hitting now with rain and a little wind. the short term forecast message mentions 50 MPH winds and small hail.
90/72 and going from the a/'d car to the a/c'd house, i have to admit that the sun felt good on my sore shoulders.
and now it's suddenly raining and thundering as a storm is forming overhead.
80/61 here—it’s been a gorgeous Independence Day. my husband got some watermelon moonshine earlier so later i’ll make some adult slushies to watch the neighborhood fireworks extravaganza.
3 thunderstorms last night, the last one at 2:30 am with heavy rain and super intense lightning, too. i’ll have to check the rain total but it’s been a wet few days out here—good.
