This is going to be the first time in about 15yrs, That i'm going to be smelt fishing this early, 7+" of ice on the tributaries from all this cold weather this month, Going out Saturday night to fish the incoming tide, It is fun catching these when there running, These fish are a delicacy, Better then french fries.

I hope you are still immature enough to make "He who smelt it, dealt it" jokes all day.

Good luck. Used to do this back in the cold winters of the 80s both around here and with my grandfather down in the Quincy MA area. No bob-house...just slumin' it with an ice chisel and a folding chair. Agreed about the eating quality...they are worth the effort.

Last year got on late, Previous 2 yrs, There was no ice at all, Been many times and filled up half or a full 5 gal bucket in the past, Been many times and came back with a few or an empty bucket, Good chance we should have some luck as they tend to spawn early season, Went a few times last year but did not get on the ice until Feb and caught a few dozen, Nothing special.

Only tried once, Jan 2008 at Randolph, a half-dozen miles downstream from AUG.  The 4 of us caught a few tommycod but nothing else. A kid about 10-y.o. was showing everyone a nice smelt.  Might've been the only one caught among the 20+ occupied shacks.

I usually hit up Bakers on the Kennebec in Pittston or James Eddy in Dresden on the Eastern River, Fished at Worthings just over the bridge in Gardiner heading back to Aug and have never done any good there, Those 3 are in the process of getting camps on, I have not fished in Bowdinham on the Cathance River for 20 yrs or so but that's where i'm going saturday, I have had good luck in the past there.

Landed in Logan at 5:45am this morning… one of the most turbulent landings I’ve ever experienced. Looks like KBOS 59 mph gust. Multiple people throwing up before even we got to gate. Took me hours to settle my nausea.

Missed the wounded duck storm… congrats to the region especially Connecticut and south shore areas.
