Wow, I never would have thought single digits had ever been recorded in October in NJ, even in a colder climate of the past.  Was that near the end of the month?

10-22-40 was the earliest single digits that I could find for the old Sussex COOP. There used to be a station at Layton in the Delaware water gap not far from the current Walpack station with had their first single digits on 10-28-36. The earliest below 0° reading for Layton and other surrounding sites was 11-26-38.

It was likely the combination of thick fresh snow cover and strong radiational cooling that produced the subzero November temperatures in 1938.

52F in Queens. 17 mile drive, +14 degrees. haha

Eastern Queens was colder.

Despite this I was one of the warmer spots at 45 degrees. I stopped dropping around 3AM for some reason. On other days my temps will drop all the way to sunrise.

There were some other temps in eastern Queens near 40 and I found one in the upper 30s.

38.9 on top of the hill. In the lower lying areas around me it dropped to 33-34.

Close to a 20° difference between 2m and 85m further to your east this morning.

I wonder how cold it got in November 1950? I know there were a lot of single digit and subzero readings in Ohio during the great blizzard which dropped a widespread 20-30+ inches of snow in the Ohio Valley and Appalachians.

Same here bottomed down at 28° this morning. First frost, freeze and hard freeze all on the same day pretty much in line date wise with the average for the first freeze of the season.

It was early here based on 21 seasons of records. The average dates are 10/12 for first frost, 10/22 for first freeze and 10/28 for first hard freeze.
