It feels weird outside right now. I can't recall the last time it felt this raw with a temp below 0F. It was spitting clear sky flurries most of the evening with relative humidities much higher than you typically see around here with these temps. If we could get another 15F colder I think we'd be primed for some IC in the valleys.

Those soundings I printed out for next week were saturated from the surface to 600 mb with temps -25 and below and mean RH of 98%

We use gas to heat the house in BTV.  Every year in june we agree on a set per month charge for the next year.  We won the bet this year.  Using gas like it's water!

The lake still has a lot of warmth in it so it will be interesting to see how it holds up over the next week.  The last time the lake froze over was in 2015 but that took till early february to freeze and it stayed that way till April 15.

How does this stretch compare?

I haven't been paying close attention to temps down in SNE but looks similar there with highs in the teens and lows below zero.

Lol. The spitting idea is great. Probably have to be -40 or more for that to happen. I think for the boiling water trick, it has to be at least -30c (-22f) to have a shot. It will never happen in my hood.

According to Jack London ("To Build a Fire") the threshold is -50 for spit freezing/crackling before it hits the ground.

Had -14 in calm air at 9 last night.  About -7 with a strong breeze at present, making it feel way colder.

Parts of Casco Bay already frozen.  Another 7-10 days of this and the ferry routes will start to close.

Back in 2015 the Chebeague ferry had to run non-stop to keep the ice broken up.

I would like to do siggy pack ice this year though, because with the new GOES-East in place we will have better resolution to see it.

Funny--I was thinking this was a balmy morning as we stayed on the positive side.

1.2* with a progged high of 3*.

Pit2 managed -7.  The river must be pretty iced.
