lol. Are you joking?

I live on a state road, and the plows have come by about 6 times since 7:00am, sparks flying, and dropping the plow to capture that 2 square foot patch of .25" ice barely at the edge of the shoulder.  I have videos of these clowns just plowing nothing.  It is an utter joke.

I refer to this as "sharpening the blades."

on the morning of January 27, Burlington was -27, on the 28th it hit 46.

In BGR the numbers were -21 and 47.  The bigger mess came earlier that month, with the following 4-day sequence:

1/16/94   -3   -20

1/17/94   42  -12   0.58"   4.6"

1/18/94   42     2   1.00"   4.6"

1/19/94     2  -14

1/20/94     7  -24

After that frigid-snow-rain-snow-frigid scenario, I-95 between BGR and Newport (probably a ways north of BGR, too) was almost undriveable, with washboard-y snow/ice chunks 4" high and frozen down so tightly that the graders made little progress removing them.  Max "safe" speed was about 15 mph on much of that stretch.

At my (then) Gardiner home, the temp rise stopped at 30, in Farmington only 20, so the real mess was avoided there.

I guess we can conclude and say that CT simply isn't a wintry place? Can't handle the snow.

;)

I sometimes wonder that with the bogus school delays and  closings sometimes....

The garage in Union does a good job on the state highways for the area that they cover.  They cover  SR 190 to the crest of Chestnut Hill on the western side of Stafford and when it snows, there is a clear difference between the two sides of the mountain.  The other garages don't as good a job IMHO.

I remember a storm back in the 90s where there was a flash freeze and 91 turned into a skating rink for about a week until we had a rain event.  Every night they would have to sand to make it drivable.  You'd cross into Mass. and the road was fine...caked with salt.  I wish the utilities and DOT would take some notes but I guess that is too much to ask.  Money spent is one thing, but technique is another.

Interesting point here, the CT DOT does not use sand anymore-salt, calcium chloride only.   Our town followed suit-no sand, which I like come spring-not having to wait to May for the street sweeper, but last night coming down Rte 8 in mid teens with snow, some sand might have been good-salt doesnt work too well in 15 degree weasther.
