I feared these numbers would start coming out after we heard the first hand accounts from Josh and his fellow chasers. I think if some data is able to survive, the 195 mph strength will be supported and I imagine the minimum central pressure may be <895 mb. Very glad the Josh made it out safely. I'll also echo what others have said and request the ethical discussion be broken out into a new thread. I may have more to say on the subject later, but I believe that you acted just as any decent person would do. Your bravery and compassion inspires me.I will say, that as a result of the attention you and your chase team brought to this horrible tragedy, I decided to donate to the Philippine Red Cross. I don't have a ton of money to spare but it doesn't matter to me. Your coverage of this event has enlightened thousands to the human suffering occurring in these areas. Those saying that you have somehow detracted from what the people in these areas are experiencing are totally wrong. If it weren't for your incredible story, I probably would have no idea of the humanitarian need as a result of this disaster. Not to mention that you literally saved lives during the course of your actions at that hotel. You are an incredible person, Josh. I don't believe so, as Josh and his crew never made it into the eye (it passed just south of them). Perhaps someone from the area did, but we won't know that for some time, if at all. dan11295 Posted November 10, 2013 Share Posted November 10, 2013 Very important thing I picked up from Josh there was how quickly conditions got very bad, both wind and surge wise. He was a few blocks from the coast and had some elevation and there was still multiple fatalities in his immediate area. Basically almost anyone closer to the water stuck at ground level was dead. Poster on previous page mentioned a water height of 21' at the airport. Not sure if that is above water or ground level. eyewall Posted November 10, 2013 Share Posted November 10, 2013 So he measured 960 mb in the eyewall and said in downtown he experienced Cat 4 conditions (Extreme conditions for sure, but well below the max winds). With a city of 200,000 and food and water trickling in things may get very violent and desperate with shooting and looting and people taking out their anger and frustration on anything including westerns. It's unfortunate that it is extremely difficult to post comments in that forum (I got repeatedly timed out). The reality is that the reporter who wrote the story, the chasers, and those they helped rescue know what actually took place. The keyboard and phone snipers who are so eagerly blasting away know little or nothing, even as their ignorance produces arrogance that appears to rival their hostility. Perhaps none of those critics have ever saved even a single life, much less in highly adverse conditions. Perhaps many or all of them would be unwilling to take even a modest degree of risk to save a life. P.S. My message finally posted. There are comments over the top on both sides. Reading the threads has convinced me that Josh is somewhere between Mother Teresa and Satan himself. Basically, thrill seekers are never welcome at disaster sites. By his own admission, that is exactly what Josh is. I'm guessing the peak gusts were at least 115 kt (135 mph). I'd even suggest somewhere between 140-150 mph! I base this best guess on my own experience in wind gusts of 130 mph, and the "Charley" gas station video taken by Mike Thesis. These winds weren't quite as intense as those in the Charley video, but it appears they are certainly exceeding the 130 mph I recorded in Katrina, best I can surmise.
