The coolest air mass is continuing to push into the region. Highs tomorrow and Wednesday will reach the lower and middle 70s. New York City will see lows in the upper 50s to lower 60s. As a result, Central Park will experience its first reading below 60° this season tomorrow morning. the timing matches well with the last two El Niño events: 2015-2016: September 14 and 2023-2024: September 15.

Wednesday through Friday will see temperatures recover mainly to the upper 70s. However, additional cool air will likely arrive some time during the next weekend.
 
The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +4.5°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +2.9°C for the week centered around September 9. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +4.23°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +2.65°C. The ongoing strong El Niño, will continue to strengthen through the mid-fall. 

The SOI was -25.91 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +1.373 today. 

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied near 54% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal September (1991-2020 normal). September will likely finish with a mean temperature near 69.4° (0.2° above normal). 

Supplemental Information: The projected mean would be 1.4° above the 1981-2010 normal monthly value.

To be fair the weather in early to mid September is radically different from the weather in October and November, it's two different seasons Chris.

To be fair Chris it's still summer. We have still gotten low and even mid 90s temps in the first half of September.  As a matter of fact the first half of September is generally warmer than the first half of June. It just so happens that meteorologists are lazy and dont like to have their seasons begin on the 21st when the seasons really begin. I actually have a solution for this. January 1st doesn't mean anything and there's no reason why the new year should start on that day. I propose we move January 1 back to the current December 21 so the new year begins on the first day of winter and this makes it a much more meaningful day and on top of that the days start to get longer from that point on. This makes our seasons match neatly with the months. So now we would have 

Winter = JFM

Spring = AMJ

Summer = JAS

Fall = OND

 

Our area has  been seeing more and more 80° days in recent years during October and November. We set the all-time October highs in the mid 90s during October 2019. JFK and other stations set records last few years multiple times for latest 80° in the season. The area add more 80° days to the list at the usual warm spots next few days.

It looks like Central Park finally hit 57, marking the first time it has dropped into the 50s since mid-June.

Oddly enough, LGA was stuck around 61 this morning and didn't budge much.  Contrary to that, my own station reported a low of 57 this morning around 0620.  Definitely a chilly, refreshing feel this morning with the low DPs and light breeze.

Plenty of 80s to come. There's 3 coming this week alone.

Parts of Fairfield County are at 30” of rain since June 1st. This beat the previous record by 3.5” at BDR. Last year was the 3rd driest over the same period. Very impressive to pull this off without any tropical systems. Just goes to show how much more moisture the record warm atmosphere can hold.
