Granted summer is over and my heat was on all day today.

Remember I'm a vegetable gardener. Most vegetable gardeners want to see enough rain for the gardens. Watering with the hose isn't as beneficial for the plants as rain is. You'll never get me to stop rooting for the rain this time of year, lol. Of course it's not that I want it every day. I want a lot of nice sunny 80 degree days for outdoor activities, but I also want the proper amount of rain for the vegetable garden. You don't want week after week of a bone dry ground during the summer -- that's not good for agriculture. I'm so glad things turned around in July after the extremely dry June that we had -- it has been very good for gardens. 

And because I'm a weather nut I also love t-storms. Lightning, wind and hail -- I love that stuff just like I love snow in the winter. So I root hard for t-storms to happen during the summer. Again though beautiful weather is great too. Monday and Tuesday are going to be 2 of the best days of the summer with 80 degrees and low humidity. Looking forward to that.

Aug is always the time of year we get these deluges on LI. I’m sure it has to do with the waters finally being warm enough not to kill the convection. Not as bad as prior years but it’s a repeat theme.

Yesterday's daily rainfall records:

Islip: 3.27" (old record: 2.61", 2001)
New York City-LaGuardia Airport: 2.86" (old record: 1.31", 1963)

Although overdone, it seems that yesterday's 12z HREF did quite well with the axis of heaviest rain occurring in the Nassau/Suffolk County areas.

Yeah, same for the two tornadoes yesterday on the South Shore that began as waterspouts. Once the ocean gets warm enough later in the season, the South Shore becomes the focus. Earlier in the season the severe storms and flooding tend to focus closer to the North Shore. Very impressive Atlantic SST rise providing the fuel once the pattern becomes favorable for storms.

...Waterspouts in southern Queens and southern Nassau County...

The National Weather Service New York, NY office along with
emergency management partners are reviewing damage, ground truth,
and radar data from two waterspouts that may have impacted portions
of the eastern Rockaways and Atlantic Beach in southern Queens and
Nassau counties.

Both of these waterspouts appear to have come ashore between 6:30
and 7:00 PM on August 20, 2026.

Based on radar data and videos/photos received, so far, the first
waterspout appears to have been short-lived, coming onshore in the
eastern Rockaways. No damage reports have come in, as of yet.

Based on radar and videos/photos received, so far, the second
waterspout appears to have come onshore in Atlantic Beach. We have
received preliminary reports of damage from this and radar evidence
shows it may have survived for longer after coming onshore.

We will continue to gather more information and investigate reports
of damage in more detail. We will come out with an official
statement on Friday, with more details.

Most guidance did well showing where the max area of rainfall would end up from NYC on east.

Was expecting 1-2" here and ended up with 2.14".   Lesser amounts just NW of here up into Sussex County with generally 1 to 1.5" up that way.

Either way everyone has had enough rain lately!  Meteorological Summer which has 10 days left to go has been wet.  In some places VERY WET.

I drove home from my son’s swim around 8pm from patchogue back to west babylon. The rain was so heavy people were pulling over. Intense stuff 

 

then my mother in law who was in Atlantic beach when the tornado hit land texted us she saw all the activity because they were a half mile from it

Just about 2 inches here.  Weekend is looking a lot drier so that's a plus.

76  / 60  luckily here 1.4 inches of rain and not the heavier / flooding amounts. Gorgeous day low 80s.  We'll see how much sun we get tomorrow / Sunday and likely some showers storms.  Trough into the northeast 8/21 - 8/28 - near / below normal.  Moderation back to normal / above overall 8/30 and  beyond with ridge shifting east but appears to be easterly flow / onshore at least near the coats otherwise could see a warm period bedfore and  near labor day.
