Some flooding in Long Beach in the vulnerable spots but it’s probably good news that the worst of the winds last night were during low tide. Out east may be worse since the SW winds generate a fetch that builds toward the east end.

70 didn’t happen on the island, max was 63 at Shirley and Farmingdale gusted to 59. Manageable for the island in the winter. Inland areas wouldn’t be able to handle 60 as well as the island, but the infrastructure did well overall

I had friends asking me last night "how is it by you" and I was telling them besides that it was absolutely pouring and I kept checking my basement and garage for water the wind as I said was not bad,,,,I was outside a few times checking the perimeter  of my house,,,,,,wild how it varied so close to home

I'm in Bardonia just off 304 and the wind here wasn't crazy. The power flickered around 10:30 but that was it. I feel the wind was stronger in the December storm. The rain performed as forecasted. My hometown of Pompton Plains is completely flooded this morning.

Yes the winds in that storm were definitely worse,,,,,my lights never flickered last night not once you know how that goes when we see them flickering there's a good chance its going out

My local area made it out relatively unscathed. Didn’t loose power and wind wasn’t very strong imby. Can’t believe schools had a 2 hour delay for this haha

I just drove west from tappan to montvale, the difference in a couple miles is kind of staggering. Tappan still had flooding issues, debris everywhere, flooded houses in sparkill and tappan. Montvale there arent branches down.

Just read that Clarkstown recorded 4.7 inches of rain,,,,yep it was absolutely pouring

I think the wind had an easier time in areas closest to the river. So that explains why Nyack, Tappan had more damage than areas even a few miles further West.

My snowpack is also completely gone with the exception of a few small piles. It was still mostly intact as of 6PM last night.

as for the rivers in New Jersey perhaps it’s time to start thinking like they did on Staten Island after Sandy.

 

Maybe it’s time to move people away from those rivers.

3.55 event total, rainfall rates peaked at just under 5” per hour in the squall line, in the dead of winter. Our climate is really living up to my username this decade.

According to the NWS gust reports, there were winds, but perhaps some gusts in most parts, unless of course you were very close to the coast, as usual.  Sustained winds have picked up this morning though.  Winds rarely follow the forecast, as its hard to mix down to surface level.

Very very severe beach erosion from what friends are telling me. Our life guard shack at Jones beach didn’t flood during the last storm but now has feet of water. As soon as I leave work at 2 I’m headed to lido, Long Beach. It’s gotta be terrible there.

2.23” of rain here.  NAM busted hard on the winds here however ( I am in an inland valley location).  Max was about 25 mph and the model called for the same strength wind gusts that were called for and largely attained on LI.  HRRR did better with the stronger wind gusts being along the coast.

It isn't just about the kids in your town, teachers have to drive to get there and many might need the extra time from floods.

After Irene FEMA finally came in and moved people out of the hardest hit areas. It's not as easy as it sounds. People are stubborn and don't want to leave. It's not just homes that are hit hard. The Pompton and Passaic rivers both impact highways and businesses. Rt 23 is now shutdown in both directions in Pequannock Township. If you're not familiar with the area you wouldn't know but this is the major artery that connects Rt 80/46 with I-287 and points North and West.

The government is rarely effective at this type of thing (nor should they be?). What will eventually happen is that the Insurance industry will review the hardest hit areas and - if warranted - rates will skyrocket and it will become nearly impossible to obtain coverage. This, in turn, drives people to leave.

There is one area in town that floods badly multiple times a year. Every time people have all their ruined stuff on the curb and it's sad, but nothing is going to change. They live in the lowest point right next to the river. 

It's a very old section of town with some historic buildings, but people need to get out of there. Not sure what can be done with it. Abandoned houses and a park it will become.
