...winter weather advisory in effect from 5 AM to 2 PM EST
saturday...

the National Weather Service in taunton has issued a winter
weather advisory for a mix of snow and freezing rain, which is
in effect from 5 AM to 2 PM EST saturday.

* locations, massachusetts west of the worcester hills, and
portions of northwestern and north central connecticut.

* hazard types, some accumulating snow, along with chance for
some light freezing rain.

* accumulations, snow accumulation of less than 1 inch in areas
below 1000 feet, with 1 to 3 inches possible above. freezing
rain with accumulations around a trace are possible at all
elevations within the advisory.

* timing, wintry mix will begin across the west near sunrise, and
continue to expand east to the worcester hills. the bulk of the
wintry mix should be coming to an end by mid day or early
afternoon.

* impacts, this mix of freezing rain with light ice accumulations
as well as accumulating snow may make for hazardous travel on
untreated roadways and walkways. those traveling for the
christmas eve holiday are urged to use some caution and allow
for extra travel

Curious. The forecast soundings aren't a real strong signal for mixed precip. There is a lack of a big warm nose to push mid level temps well above surface temps. It's mostly boundary layer driven ptype to me.

Yeah doesn't look like freezing rain sounding at all...though I guess at the onset when lift is weak, there could be some freezing drizzle...and maybe some brief wetbulb-induced sleet too for areas.

Yeah, freezing drizzle would be the most likely pytpe to occur after rain and snow.

RGEM has been a bit snow-happy the past two systems. It's a good model, but this is definitely showing it is not without its faults.

It's been to wet with the pass two system. Last storm it had similar temp profile like the rest of the models but way to much qpf during the cold period of the storm down here. The snow maps have been way to generous also. I wonder if it's qpf happy being a by product of the nam
