If you need a taste of fall head out to Dolly Sods WV! I went today (I guess yesterday now) and it always amazes me how the Allegheny Front is just a different climate. Drove up from the valley at 82 degrees to the top at 70 degrees. Went on a 12 mile hike and the landscape was beautiful, reminded me of tundra shrubbery I learned about last year in an arctic ecology course. Crossed Red Creek and entered the mud flats for 1 mile which was a bit rough. Otherwise, nearly a perfect day, and would recommend without reservations! (just skip the end of dobbins grade trail and take ravens ridge instead) Driving wasn’t too bad either, 2 hours 35 minutes and the vast majority of it was 4 lane highways (even in WV!). I’ll upload my other pictures later, but here’s one from my phone!

I love dolly sods.  We've still never been there in any season other than the dead of winter though.  Winter backpacking there is always an adventure.

Once again the NAM looks like crap before a precip event. But hrrr is really rainy for the metro areas tomorrow.

Regarding the Sunday - Wed potential, the physics based models have been playing hopscotch.

The AI models have been amazingly consistent with a recent uptick in expectations.

AI and AI ens have scored Augusta with a blend of 1.20" since 12z Thursday.  The latest run has increased to 1.40".

I’ll be in Berlin, Md <—> Assateague. Could change or cancel reservation no later than today but decided we’re going. Sunday & Wednesday look “fairly” decent, Monday & Tuesday questionable. But not rain all the time. I’m good with only overcast skies if it doesn’t rain all day at the beach — still getting the UV rays, may feel more comfortable, perhaps less people.

Really impressed with the humidity this summer.  Even the NW flow patterns aren't really fending off the dews very much.  Biked over at Little Bennett yesterday and it had that classic, mid-Atlantic sticky feel in the air.  Trails were actually fairly dry, though...which was a little surprising given the recent rain.

I hear ya. I'm in Myrtle Beach and our weather looks shitty tomorrow thru Wednesday. Hoping it's wrong or at least it's not an all day rainer.

Every little chance of rain, weaknesses in the subtropical ridge, and frontal boundaries, are dumping rain on us. We had a 10 percent chance of a weak frontal boundary this afternoon. Well guess what we got smacked by 1.3 inches of torrential rain. Now we are up to 35.7 inches. Hard to believe nearly 3 FEET by early August down here!

Overcast, sprinkles, 70 dewpoint. Disgusting. Fall can't come soon enough.

Don't know why, but muggy air always feels dirty to me, no matter what the air quality - and the lower the dewpoint, the cleaner and fresher it feels, even with wildfire smoke!!

 

(I think it might date back to when I was a kid at summer day camp. I had to join in with strenuous athletic activities in the worst of the Northern Virginia summer, and my mother would always dress me too warm, in dark colors, so of course I got prickly heat and was pouring with sweat; to this day I despise the smell of wet grass for the same reason. And my house didn't have air conditioning back then either!)

The NAM says what rain today or tonight for DC and east. The storm to the west just goes north and hits the same ole flooded areas of NY.

Light rain at the little Bennett trailhead (biked a different loop this time). Perfectly timed…started to rain right at the last stretch. Humidity is thick…the atmosphere no longer wants this area to be in a drought.

Yep, a completely different world up there. Glad you had a great trip, as someone else said, just gotta keep a watch out for the 'sliders' on the ground and whatnot.
