A base layer of salt prevents a sheet of ice on the bottom and gives more traction for the trucks

Daily snowfall records for today: Central Park: 10.0" (1905), Newark: 5.5" (2000), Bridgeport: 4.0" (2000), LaGuardia: 5.8" (2000), Islip: 3.0" (2000), JFK: 6.2" (2000).

7am snowfall: NYC/Central Park: 0.8", NYC/JFK: 0.5", Newark: 0.7", NWS New York: 0.2"

LGA: 0.5", Islip: 0.1". For those interested, we are seeing between 16:1 and 20:1 snow-to-liquid ratios with these values with this initial burst of snow.
