  1. Problem is those warm periods are accompanied by wash-outs which make the conditions in the East pretty poor. Can't really see how in a warmer future snowmaking helps a small East coast resort overcome the elevation advantage and proximity to the pac moisture the west has. Last couple years were anomalously bad but Belleayre isnt out-snowmaking Breckenridge.
  2. Hard to imagine NYC under 30 for a winter again. Burlington Vt didn’t even average under 30 degrees this year.
  3. About 1500’ elevation about seven miles from Gore. Indian lake area and north definitely still hanging onto snow better. Shame to see it change.
  4. Could be. Late 90’s I lived in Mt Sinai and worked in Flushing and certainly don’t remember Flushing feeling snowier. But overall BNL’s stats show busts under 10” have become much more common. Can’t see that changing unless the background warming somehow does. Our place in the Adirondacks can’t even hold snowcover through core winter anymore.
  5. Depends on how you define 'nothing'. Using BNL's snowfall stats (right next to us in Wading River) - from when their record starts in 1947 through 1990 there was only one year with under 10" of snowfall. Since 1990 there have been 7. That definitely seems like a change.
  6. Agreed. Maybe I’d go C- as the week in January along with this one managed to feel wintry. But two weeks out of 12 doesn’t cut it. Nice snow shower at the moment in wading river, 31f
  7. 2” in wading river, Suffolk north shore. Missed the better totals but snow on snow is always a good thing Probably wind up with 7 days of snowcover from this stretch, just like the January stretch. Gives this year some separation from some of the worst.
  8. Up to 6” on the deck in wading river - after a slow start the Suffolk band has delivered. Still looks like potential for another 1 or 2”. Satisfying event in any year. Outstanding in this one.
  9. Just under 1” in Wading River, north shore Suffolk. Snow had been light to moderate. 32 degrees. Neighborhood street covered.
  10. 3 years out of those 10 years in DC accounted for 60%+ of the total snowfall -- thats probably how it will play out here a well. Bluewave has illustrated the feast of famine nature of our snowfall many times.
  11. Agreed. Drove up to our place near Gore today. Theres more mud than snow around. Remembering how reliably cold and snowy the end of December used to be up here is depressing. To some extent spring/fall tourism has picked up and the ski resorts are doing more to attract visitors in four seasons. Holiday weeks like this take a toll though…
  12. Gore webcam looks better than I can remember ... they're reporting 24" from this storm so far and 43" for first two weeks of March. Great stretch.
  13. Not even a trace in wading river - you were in a good spot!
  14. Some light snow and sleet in Wading River, 34f. Third try at covering the grass this winter. Should be the charm- fingers crossed.
  15. I don't know - if you look at Don's futility chart six of those years are in the last 25 years. Think its pretty likely we see awful winters like this again, along with some high snowfall years mixed in as well. The endangered species is probably a wall to wall cold winter.
  16. Light snow in Wading River, 33F with a quick coating on the ground. Almost like the old days.
  17. Nice little light snow shower on north shore of LI. Colder surfaces already coated. Might go unnoticed in a typical year but have face pressed against the window now.
  18. Still around 50 days of more favorable climo left, still think a shutout is the least likely outcome. At least I hope so.
  19. Those 80’s winters at least had plenty of cold intervals. The snow futility this year may feel the same as those but the fact that we continue to warm I think dampens hopes for future big winters, at least at the coast. Not saying we’re done, but obviously there’s got to be a breaking point.
  20. Would be much easier to appreciate the positives if these warm episodes didn't feel connected to an alarming problem.
  21. Personal inconvenience may be the only thing that gets some people to care about this.
  22. Many people would say the same about our area. That area has benefitted from alot of investment over the last decade. I don’t think someone used to a suburban lifestyle down here would feel out of place in some of those suburbs.
