This is off topic a bit but ... Today makes 50 years  to the day when 29 people died when a massive storm near the great lakes sank the Edmund Fitzgerald...

• The Sinking: The freighter was sailing through a severe storm with high winds and waves when it disappeared from radar. The exact cause of the sinking remains a mystery, but some believe the ship may have broken apart after hitting the bottom or suffered a structural failure.
• Loss of Life: All 29 men on board, including captain Ernest M. McSorley, perished in the disaster. No survivors were found.
• The Wreck Site: The ship now rests in two large pieces on the bottom of Lake Superior, over 500 feet deep. The wreck is considered a maritime grave, and diving without a permit is illegal.
• Memorials and Legacies:
  • The ship's bell was recovered in 1995 and is now on display at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
  • Gordon Lightfoot's 1976 song brought national attention to the tragedy and became a famous folk ballad.
  • There have been other memorials, including a memorial swim, to honor the crew.
  • Improvements in weather forecasting and safety technology have made a similar disaster less likely today, though the risk is not zero.

He might… that’s where some of the models have had some random light snow. Radar suggests it’s possible.

Was quite the adventure! First two hikes I went on were pretty tame with 1-2 inches on the ground (too far north I think) before I headed 10 miles south and got a hike with 3-4 inches on the ground. Couple intense bands punctuated the day as well. Will post some pictures when able

Today was the first day that my hands felt legitimately cold while shooting hoops (my rib injury has started to simmer down a bit). Definitely a thick chilly out there today, though we did manage about 60/40 sun here which was a welcome surprise.

Not thinking more than a coating is possible here, but boy has it turned chilly! Currently 25.8/14.9 with a NW wind 15 gusting to 27. That makes the WC 14/10. There are still a few flurries flying about.

I grew up in NW Ohio. Heard this song a lot.

10:30 down to 35 and still eindy,  30.5 is my low for season and 40 coldest at midnight which is already  eclipsed.

Pretty uniform temp distribution west of the Bay. Shows that this cold was advection-driven with the wind, rather than a more typical radiation-driven morning low.

Low of 16 with winds gusting to 41mph with a fair amount of blowing snow. Event total 2.7". Beautiful shot of winter.

Low 30 and breezy. Some of the tarps we put over the (still producing somehow) tomato plants blew around. They may not have survived.  We'll see.
