Layman Posted yesterday at 11:47 AM Share Posted yesterday at 11:47 AM 0.42" Sat, 0.89" Sun, 1.52" Mon and 0.15" today since midnight. 2.98" should do it for the total. Forecasts were between 2.5" - 3.5" for this area if I recall correctly so they seem pretty spot on.

Yes, that would conflict w/ FCC regulations I think but never understated the power of lobby. The entire TV landscape is becoming a CF. Streaming was supposed to be the panacea, but now it is more expensive than cable w/ regular price increases way ahead of inflation. And for sports fans? Trying to find *where* your local or fav team will be on, not just when, is becoming absurd. Sometimes you do not even know the day before what streaming service/station a particular game will be on! And just wait until the SB becomes PPV! Ive been stating for years that sports moving to streaming is laying the ground work for an eventual move to PPV.... I have no idea what he’s talking about. It was a top story, but the communication by local Mets looked on point. NWS called for minor CF with pockets of moderate potential and that’s what happened. Winds were correct and I think models did a good job with the NW-SE max QPF in SE MA to metro west.
CoastalWx Posted yesterday at 12:05 PM Share Posted yesterday at 12:05 PM It was highly anomalous for this time of year, and with weekends busy with activities, I don’t have an issue with it being a top story. I will say I was a little surprised at the lack of damage and power outages with winds near 50kts. Then again Mother Nature has done some good tree trimming around here since 2010 or so.

Sure, not all OCMs follow that or want to do that, but many are forced to. If one wanted to scale things properly and have something unique to say, they should have said, "such a storm fcst is quite unusual for September", but that takes more than generic knowledge of wx, one needs to know local wx history as well. This is of value b/c it puts things in proper context and perspective, which sadly is sorely lacking these days in media. Not all Nor'easters are alike, but they are treated as such for max hype and ratings. Heaven help us when the next HU takes aim at New England. Mark my words, they will make ZERO difference between the 1938 HU and a MEH HU like Belle in 1976. "Look, the track is *similar* the 1938 HU!" O-kay, but all big HU hits in New England have similar tracks! That doesn't say anything really to the public as to total sensible wx impact It's like after Sandy, every E Coast TC threat was "track similar to Sandy" which in that case was nonsense. Sandy 's track was exceptional. But never let a recent big event go unused for hype for "the next one!" 100% correct!

What kind of station do you have ? You seem very old fashioned and behind the times, so I’m guessing an old mercury thermometer mounted outside the kitchen window all rusted out. old fashioned and behind the times? lol ! I might me a few years older than you, but I'm fairly certain based on what you've posted on these forums over the years that you are way more "old fashioned" and way more "behind the times" my thermo is one of those alcohol filled jobbers. Mercury is extremely toxic to anything alive and leaving a mercury filled thermometer exposed in the environment is a bad idea I don't have a weather station yet, but would like to get one. If I get one, I will site the sensors where they they belong; I sure won't mount the temp sensor next to the grill on my deck like yours. tamarack
Finished this event with 1.75", fortunately about 3 times more than I expected. Month up to 3.06" (average is 3.70"), almost enough to get Sandy River over the 25th percentile. Colors here are at/near peak, with lots of red maples wonderfully bright. Birches and sugar maples approaching peak, white ash well past, about 75% leaf drop around here on that species. Red oaks: Autumn? What's that?

Or, am I just imagining they turn early to begin with "Swamp maples" are almost always red maples (Acer rubrum) on a wet site. The wetness lowers fertility and keeps the roots somewhat cooler than on well drained sites, probably causing that early turning (as you guessed). The color is common for most red maples (excellent this year), though there's a variety of sorts that turns yellow (also good). 1

Did not have much "cleaning" of the trees after Gloria in 1985. Bob did some in 1991, but only in RI/sern MA really. The only real big tree cleanings in the 90s and massive power outages was the early Dec 1996 1-2 punch (only time I have seen two discrete strong nor'easter back-to-back in 2 calendar days here!) and then the ice storm in Jan 1998. Then nothing that big until the Dec 2008 ice storm and then we really got some "house cleaning" events since w/ a cluster into the mid 2010s. @CoastalWxcan't stop talking about the GHG tree damage from the Bliz of 13! But a true widespread cleaning is still lacking overall. Need another Gloria or higher for that. Need to tax/pressure the trees inland w/ FQT G60kt and higher for several hours w/ leaves on the trees and an unfrozen ground. @ineedsnow be like "BRING IT ON!"
