CONFIRMED I have a swim team event tomorrow next to the pool deck for 2 hours tomorrow. It's a team dinner event and I think its a good idea to cancel it with HIs near 110 degrees expected but was wondering if you or another met have any opinions. If it's in the evening it should be good to hold.
Eskimo Joe
HI of 109° in Clarksville and 106° in Poolesville. These are in open, meadow-like areas well away from concrete. Legit.
SnowenOutThere
6 hours ago, CAPE said: That's good stuff but way overcomplicates it. The simple fact is that the sun doesn't really heat the air- it heats the ground which then transfers the heat to the air by radiation, and it was probably determined that 2 meters was a height where there is significantly less direct influence from retention of heat/ radiation of heat from ground. And again, that height is approximately human head level. I agree, and the whole study of microclimatology is concerned with that ground heat transfer. The 2m standard was picked for both its "human height" and because it is high enough to not be extremely linked to the ground. However, when forecasting I think it's important to do the overcomplicating bit to account for circumstance. If you're caring for livestock, crops, or forested areas then the best possible forecast would account for what that specific area feels. Especially when it comes to frost and crops there is a multimillion dollar industry of figuring out cold pool drainage at 50cm from the ground. To reiterate, I am not calling the 2m standard bad or useless, but just pointing out its real world limits.

It's 6-8pm so the beginning might be rough. Maybe I'll suggest we do 7-8pm instead as that should get the whole area to be in the shade and another hour after peak temperatures.
