We can be a two man therapy group. Part of the whole evolution of this was the cold front and winds happening here so I guess in some way I’m taking part in it lol.

I missed Feb 2003 in Boston when we went on a stupid long weekend getaway to Quebec. We had Boston news on the hotel TV so I could watch the coverage while we sat under moonlit skies and the coldest temps I’ve ever experienced (-20). I liked to think I experienced the cold HP that made it all possible.

One of the reasons I hate taking trips in the winter is for fear of missing something with this potential. Yet I'm gone this March 3-10 in Florida. I've been checking the weather for those dates here for the past week.

It was planned for a while and worked out with cheap hotels/flights weekend after Mardi Gras.

I'm also in Florida between those same dates so we're definitely gonna miss something

i dont think he recovered from the snowstorm that never happened..

Forecasts from TWC and models predicted a massive “Godzilla” or “Roidzilla” event, with 15-24 inches of snow possible from Washington, D.C., to southern New England, leading to school closures and panic buying.

The system was expected as a multi-day Miller B setup along I-95, compared to historic storms like January 1996 and the 1888 Blizzard.

The Bust
Instead, the storm underperformed dramatically: only about 1 inch on March 5 in many areas south of NYC, with 3-7 inches elsewhere, and heavier snow (up to Godzilla levels) shifting north/east of forecasts, like eastern Long Island.

In the old days we had chief meteorologist Gordon Barnes and meteorologist Alan Kasper.

Does anyone remember Tex Antoine from ABC? One of the first weather guys to explain some meteorology, with a little personality.
At the time, most weather was simply presented as a forecast.
He was drunk on air one evening, said something distasteful, and was summarily fired.

That was the early March 2001 one where there were TWC maps with 3 ft in these parts, right?  That was astounding and might as well have said 8 ft.  How close to the expected start time did it become apparent that it would not be happening?  Also, wasn't that another case where it was on the radar a week or six days out, then the models lost it, then it was back on the radar 4 days out but in a somewhat different form?

Lastly, that was 25 years ago next week.  Good God.

If only we had the mesoscale models back then

When I made the reservations all I could think of was how pissed I'll be if we have a repeat of March 7 2018 while we're away. Watching on the ring cameras isn't  a substitute for being out in it.

Tex Antoine was a beloved New York City TV weatherman from the 1950s to 1970s, famous for drawing weather maps live with his cartoon sidekick Uncle Wethbee.[wikipedia]

So that's where the wxbb veteran uncwethbee got his screen name. 25 years and I never knew that

If I remember correctly, it was never apparent that it would not be happening until the event was in progress. I think they rolled with that forecast all the way through.

The sad part is that if the storm even verified halfway, 2000-01 would have been remembered as an all-time great winter, with 50+ inches in NYC and 40+ inches in PHL. Instead, that winter is remember as a bust, and not as fondly as the great winters of 2002-03, 2003-04, and 2004-05 that followed.

For Jan 2016 I remember it raining for about 30 seconds in Austin and getting windy, which was the initiating system to get the HECS going. That was my part in it. It was 50/50ish until the last minute how much would make it to NYC. That day it was gorgeous, 75 degrees there and I just looked at the palm tree next to my swimming pool and laughed.

Sure entertaining for his time but a tragic story.

He took his own life at age 59 in 1983. I don't think he ever got over his firing which was inevitable considering his on air comment.

As I remember it Roger grimsby just finished a horrible story about an underage girl being raped. The weather was next and Tex opened up the dialogue with "As Confuscious once said, if rape is inevitable sit back, relax and enjoy it" You could have heard a pin drop in the studio immediately afterward.  He was fired the next day.
