People were using March snow and cold as a workaround for the loss of December in the 2010s. Like the season shifted vs what actually happened…the season shrunk

Under brilliant sunshine, the temperature soared into the 70s across much of the region. New York City topped out at 74°.

The first two weeks of March had a mean temperature of 49.5° in Central Park. That broke the old record for warmest first two weeks of the month of 49.0° that was set in 2020. Five of the ten warmest first two weeks of March have occurred since 2000: 2000, 2012, 2016, 2020, and 2024.

Despite some possible showers, tomorrow will be another very warm day with the temperature rising into the middle and upper 60s in the New York City area and middle and upper 70s from Philadelphia and southward. The generally mild conditions will persist through the coming weekend.

Afterward, it will turn cooler. However, as has generally been the case this winter, no direct Arctic shots are likely. As a result, the cold will likely not be severe for the season. Moderation will occur later in the week. The closing days of March could turn warm.

No significant snowfall appears likely in the northern Middle Atlantic region through at least March 20th. The probability of an unprecedented second consecutive winter with less than 10" seasonal snowfall in New York City's Central Park has continued to increase. Records go back to 1869.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.0°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +1.4°C for the week centered around March 6. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +0.98°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +1.53°C. A basinwide El Niño event is ongoing. The ongoing El Niño event will continue to fade during March. Neutral conditions could develop during the spring.

The SOI was +18.43 today.

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was -0.502 today.

Based on sensitivity analysis applied to the latest guidance, there is an implied 94% probability that New York City will have a warmer than normal March (1991-2020 normal). March will likely finish with a mean temperature near 47.1° (4.3° above normal).

Another way to look at winter futility would be percentage of precip falling as snow. I took only Dec-Jan-Feb total precip and snowfalls, and on an assumption of 10:1 ratio, calculated percentages of precip falling as snow. In certain cases, snowfall liquid equivalent would introduce errors, and also a few winters would end up with better percentages if Nov or March were included (most would drop further). 

A lot of winters finish with percentages of 10 to 30, but most of the "futile" winters as found by total snowfalls are also below 10% conversion rates (1900-01 was not because it was quite a dry winter).

NYC will need to see some snowfall improvement the next 5 years for the 2020s to avoid being the lowest snowfall decade following the highest during the 2010s since 1950.

1938: A tornado hit McPaul, Iowa, while moving from southeast to northwest. Another tornado raced through Batesville, Illinois, at 60 to 65 mph. Another tornado causing F4 damage killed 10 and injured 12 in St. Clair County, Missouri. This tornado was part of an outbreak that produced four different tornadoes and was responsible for 11 deaths and 42 injuries.

1941 - The most severe blizzard in modern history struck North Dakota and Minnesota. The blizzard hit on a Saturday night while many are traveling, and thus claimed 71 lives. Winds gusted to 75 mph at Duluth MN, and reached 85 mph at Grand Forks ND. Snow drifts twelve feet high were reported in north central Minnesota. 1988 - More than one hundred hours of continuous snow finally came to an end at Marquette MI, during which time the city was buried under 43 inches of snow. 1989 - Afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe weather from Alabama to the Middle Atlantic Coast. Thunderstorm winds gusted to 80 at Virginia Beach VA. 1990 - Low pressure crossing the Upper Mississippi Valley produced high winds from the Northern and Central Plains to the Great Lakes Region and Ohio Valley. Winds gusted to 73 mph at Iowa City IA, and wind gusts reached 79 mph at Waukesha WI. Winds of 75 mph were reported around Rapid City SD, with gusts to 100 mph. 2004: Brownsville, Texas, breaks a century-old record for the most significant daily rainfall accumulation for March with 3.23 inches.
