Coldest night/morning here at 37.5 and likely the coolest readings through at least Oct 4th.   Clouds from Teddy reaching LI and offshore NJ.  Warmup underway as breach the 70s today and get near ot into the 80s Wed -  Fri.  Weekend may be more cloudy thh an initially though and perhaps wetter too - will need to see.  By early next week  Mon  - Tue (9/28 / 29) front and trough approaching but ahead of that warmer humid and rainy .  Loos like the real cool air arrives Oct 4 but may the brunt of the cool/cold may stay west and not match this recent cool in the area other than a day.  Warmup quickly behind the trough towards the week of the 5th.

9/22 - 9/29 : Warmer than normal

9/30 - 10/3 : cooler

10/4 - 10/6 : Much cooler

10/7 : warmer times ahead.

I'm fine with the cooler than normal daytime temperatures, but I do not want the heat on and I definitely do not want to hav windows closed because it is cold. We already have a small outbreak where I teach and being indoors with windows closed will only make things worse. This is one year where I would be okay with warmer than average temperatures for much of winter, as much as I love snow and skiing, I am very worried about increasing risk.

Awesome satellite image of Teddy out there heading for Nova Scotia. Definitely expanding big time and becoming extra tropical but still 100mph storm. Cool to look at but glad it’s not headed this way.

Probably the best looking system in that region since the 950mb benchmark blizzard.

Morning thoughts...

Today started off with very chilly and, in some cases, near record low temperatures. Minimum temperatures included: Albany: 32°; Allentown: 36°; Bridgeport: 43°; Boston: 45°; Islip: 43°; New York City: 48°; Newark: 46°; Philadelphia: 47°; Poughkeepsie: 33°; Providence: 45°; Westhampton: 32°; and, White Plains: 42°. Under bright sunshine, a noticeable warmup should commence today. The temperature will likely top out mainly in the lower 70s across the region. Likely high temperatures around the region include:

New York City (Central Park): 72°
Newark: 74°
Philadelphia: 73°

Above normal temperatures will likely continue through the remainder of this week.

Thanks, Don!  The earliest freezing temp at FOK?

I see we were down in the mid 40s again at JFK!

Looks like we had a similar cool streak in 2000 and that was a la nina winter too, I guess it will come down to December if we have a snowy winter or not.....

That was like a mini version of the Jan 2016 long duration blizzard!  Didn't the Jan 2018 bomb have a record storm surge at Boston, surpassing the one from Feb 1978?

Yes, it was the earliest freezing temperature at FOK. The prior record was set on October 2, 1998 and tied on October 2, 2009.

Thanks, Don.  Let's see if we can get the longest freeze season on record....when was the latest ever freeze at FOK, Don?  I think it may have been around the summer solstice actually, in June 1967?

That was the one. Record blizzard in January...first February 80°...30” of snow in March on Long Island. So the big winter weather swings which have been occurring more frequently in recent years.

Yes!  The one which immediately comes to my mind is 2015-16, what a wild winter that was!  JFK 40"+ of snow and 40 degree F avg winter temp!  Was even below zero on Valentine's Day!

Also going from 2014-15 to 2015-16 was a huge shock (one of the coldest Feb in 2015 to the warmest Dec in 2015).

The winter weather swings in recent years have been remarkable. With the exception of 10-11, all my recent favorite snowstorms have occurred during winters with some extreme warmth. 15-16...16-17...17-18....etc...I missed the best jackpots during the colder 13-14 and 14-15 winters.

The latest freeze was May 22, 2002. This year’s last freeze was May 21 when the temperature fell to 29 degrees, tying the record set in 2002.
