The world record for rain in one hour is 13.8".

seems impossible.  If it didn't happen in the U.S. , i'd find it hard to believe.

did it ?

EDIT: nevermind, find one close enough

12 inches an hour in MO.

and the 24 hour record = 71.8"

But this was at over 9,000 feet.

Took me four and a half hours to get from my house in Lindenhurst to my job in Islip.  Normally takes 20-30 mins.  Absolutely unreal!  Sunrise Highway was full of water, mud, and abandoned vehicles.  Never seen anything like this!  That rate from KISP is just incredible and the real-world consequences of it are easily seen!

A old and mistaken value of a 24 hr. rainfall of 1.870 m (73.62’’) at Cilaos, La Reunion, on 15-16 March 1952 (cited by J.L.H. Paulhus [indian Ocean and Taiwan Rainfalls Set New Records, Monthly Weather Review, 93 (5), 1965, pp. 331-335], is sometimes quoted. However, Reunion meteorologists state that Cilaos value is "an old mistake." They do confirm that this figure is invalid and that the accurate 24h rainfall extreme is 1.825 mm recorded at Foc-Foc during tropical cyclone Denise in 1966.

Same here. I don't recall anything heavier in two hours in our area.

It rained 3-4" per hour during the August 2011 rain event at home and it literally was almost blinding intensity. That caused as much or more damage to my town than Irene did a week later. Once you get to that point and it lasts more than 20 minutes, the damage becomes very real, even in places far from rivers.

The catskills didn't actually get much from this storm I'm near liberty ny at 1,550 ft and measured .65 in from the whole storm. The western catskills usually do very well with upslope southeast winds but not this time.

the convective system that drenched the mid atlantic/long island robbed areas to the NW. they are difficult to forecast

That event was insane. I think I hit a 37" rain rate at one point on the Davis.

Parts of Sunrise Highway were still flooded this afternoon as I drove by, especially after exit 44.

This one's under the Islip Ave (Route 111) overpass; must've been some serious flooding if they're still pumping at this hour:

Wow, I'm glad we missed the worst of this one, although 4-5" of rain is nothing to sneeze at either.

Euro and it's ensembles have been persistent with a large rainmaker for the middle of next week. Last night's runs showed it again. Winter like system with a closed H5 low.

Timing is Tuesday night into Wednesday right now.

Setup wise, it looks much more widespread then yesterday's isolated downpour.
