Scooter
Scooter, I can't see where you are located on my phone but apparently roads are horrible here and not just the bridges. They're shutting down roads and power outages are being reported. I'm in Thomasville south of you. My brother lives in Oak Ridge and said they had a lot more sleet than here. It's definitely not looking good, especially since this is all happening at night now. Starting to worry about power again too.
jburns
What are thoughts on road conditions in the morning? Slushy in the morning or mostly wet, except elevated surfaces of course. A lot depends on how liberal the DOT can be with salt spreading. Tonight on the news they said supplies are very low and suppliers are rationing what they have left. Early in the morning could be a problem assuming temps remain where they are.
superjames1992
Just took a walk outside... There's definitely a lot of ZR mixed in with the sleet. It's coming down relatively heavily. EDIT: Thanks for the sounding, Grit. Looks like we're done with the snow threat, then. Hopefully, we can keep the warm nose at bay enough to give us more sleet than ZR... It's quite cold from 900 mb on down to the surface.
packbacker
I think this is turning into a major storm. All we need is .25 of glaze to warrant a winter storm and I'm at least half way there now. Very surprised the triad doesn't have a WSW. Going to be ugly.

FLweather
The saving grace for yall worried about alot of zr. Which since my last post has transitioned to all sleet with some big raindrops or wet snow So what warm layer that strenghten durring the lull is starting to be erroded. So my guess would be a transition to sleet and zr limiting ice accural.
packfan98
Who was it on here that said they had a feeling that people would get caught off guard? Was it superjames ? I think that was me. We all were caught off guard with that batch of sleet that setup over the triad for most of the day.
NCSNOW
How far are you from Denton? About 10 to 12 miles as the crow flys. Need to go fill up the gas can. Used it up in the mower this past weekend believe it or not. Man I don't want to get back out in this mess.
superjames1992
I think that was me. We all were caught off guard with that batch of sleet that setup over the triad for most of the day. Yeah, I thought we were done after the morning batch. This batch caught me off-guard (until I saw some of the short-range models this afternoon). It's fairly potent. I guess it caught the NWS and all the local news stations off-guard, too, considering we had nothing by freezing drizzle in the forecast. This whole day has busted in the cold/wet side. This afternoon wasn't supposed to feature as much precip as it did and we were supposed to top out in the mid to upper 30s when, in fact, we never got above 30 (at GSO). Having freezing rain and sleet during the middle of the afternoon in mid-March was an interesting experience. I'm not sure about RAH calling this precipitation mainly light. I'd say it's moderate, personally. It's coming down pretty decently at the moment.

WIth raleigh saying possibly 2 tenths more between now and 2 a.m. It's a slam dunk
packfan98
Fox8 has a great live blog on their website (and app) reporting on road conditions and closings. It's a disaster out there! Wrecks everywhere. Many interstates are shutdown. Assume every bridge is completely iced over. Stay off the roads folks.

gritsnc
My aunt and cousin are stranded at PTI airport. My cousins flight came in at 9:05 (2 hours late) and now his luggage is lost. They are advising her not to leave. She's from Florida, in a rental car and has NO experience driving in this kind of weather (not that anyone can really have "experience" driving on ice).
