March 5th 2001 semi-blizzard. I had just gotten a great job in NYC and I was driving home to Newport. I was so pumped and I was driving too fast. Sleet had changed to snow in north Jersey, but it was light. When I approached the Fairfield, CT area it quickly became heavy and 95 became snow-packed in seconds. I spun around a good 3 times and I was really surprised I didn't tip over. I just missed crashing into the cement guard-rail by inches. A group of very nice Hispanic guys pulled over and gave me a push out of the snow on the shoulder and I was on my way....

I was in my early 20s and I was stupid. It was a good lesson to learn however, that driving slow in the snow is the best way to go.

1) Was standing near a tree in the Adirondacks. All of a sudden it just gets slammed by lightning and splits. I jumped about 30 feet into the air (or so it seemed). Wasn't shocked or anything but I don't think myself or those in my party had a heartbeat below 180 for hours.

2) Caught out trail running in a very vicious train of T-storms. Watching trees all around me snap and pop off huge branches mixed with whiteout rain as I sprinted about 1.5 miles to a shelter. I was scarred.

3) 1996 ADK Derecho. Woke up thinking..why is a train coming through here...we don't have any train tracks nearby. And then seeing all the trees by the cabin go squish.

9 days ago a tree hit my house so hard the entire house shuttered just a little scary.

Perfect Storm rogue wave broke over the dune I hid behind sending rocks the size of softballs careening down, missed me but nailed my car. Proud dents though.

Car hit squarely mid hood by lightning, that was crazy, another proud dent.

My "scariest" or what the heck was I thinking moment was the time I experienced hurricane force+ winds camping on Mt Washintgton. We camped out right at tree line but we setup in an open area. The winds were calm when we set up but soon after sunset the winds picked up and by the time we went to bed the entire tent was caving in and the tent was flopping around. I volunteered to get out and re-check the anchors and while I was out there the wind kept picking the tent up and I was affraid it was going to blow off the side of the mountain.

The winds continued the next day and when we reached the summit I went to the weather office to "talk shop" and found out they had 100mph+ winds the previous night. I got to stand at the top of the weather station and experience 80-90mph gusts which was awesome but knowing the I slept in a tent while cat 1 or 2 winds were rolling by was a highlight!

I am sure the scariest moment was probably a thunderstorm as a child before I really understood what was happening but those blur together. The scariest moment as an adult was in the fall of 1996. I was living in an apartment in South Royalton VT when a severe thunderstorm warning flashed on the screen. A few minutes later the storm was going pretty nicely when I started to hear a roar. So very often you hear a tornado being described as sounding like the roar of a freight train. This sounded exactly like a freight train coming down the tracks and for a couple of seconds I thought this was a storm that had ramped up to include a very rare, for Vermont, tornado. After a couple of seconds I remembered that I was living 20 yards from a railroad line and I could now see the light on the front of the freight train. For those couple of seconds though it was pretty scary though. Otherwise it was a strong but otherwise forgettable storm.

Went out west with wife & in-laws in their motorhome in 2006. We had stopped in St. Louis for the night, and we were in the motorhome when a nasty line of storms went through. We were staying at the Casino Queen on the East St. Louis side of the river. had a nice view of St. Louis

Sky got black, tornado sirens started wailing, and we took shelter in a brick bathroom. I watched the entire skyline of St. Louis disappear in a cloud of debris. Pretty scary Motorhome (32' class C) was moved about 10 feet, lots of awnings from those caught unaware were destroyed. LOTs of damage, buildings blown down, trucks blown off highway. I remember that night it was sweltering too.

Had it hit an hour sooner, we were all up in the arch.....

Weather doesn't scare me. :) ..because I always understand whats going on now and I crave bad wx. LOL I remember as a kid I'd be scared by tornado watches because I didn't understand that 99.9% of the time you're house isn't gonna get hit. Also I think (not sure) that in the 70's they issued a lot of them because the science was poor and they would broad brush a large geographical area. It was usually a non event.

lol

As I have said countless times, my locale does not receive "scary" weather....it just snows.

Deep sea fishing off of Block Island when a funnel cloud was coming out of the sky... it did not touch the water but I almost got to be close to a waterspout...circa 1988

Driving home during the commute from hell - Dec 2007? I forget. Watching cars do pirouettes on Rte 2 - and other drivers beeping at them to get out of the way

Ice Storm 2008 - hearing hundreds of shotguns going off as trees and branches were coming down in that dreadful night

Stuck on Mt Washington in a thunderstorm. Stuck on Monroe in a thunderstorm. Stuck on Moosilauke in a thunderstorm. Stuck on Washington again in a thunderstorm. That's why I won't hike a 14er here in June or July! :lightning:

No seriously, my scariest weather moment ever was sitting at home with my family in a loud thunderstorm when I was about 8 and a big picture came on the TV that said "TORNADO WARNING". Of course, in the mid 70s, a tornado 30 miles away prompted a warning over a big area, and it was nowhere near us. Scared the crap out of me though.

And the cannon shots in Shrewsbury that early morning in Dec 2008, when tree after tree after tree came down before my eyes. Not scared but a bit shocked.

I also forgot about being on a canoe trip on the Saco and having to cross a lake during a thunderstorm that came up suddenly...

That was stupid.

It got a little hairy trying to escape north in Westchester and Putnam County in late January during that 20 inch event down there. Essentially a white-out until I got to around I-84 and then rapidly drove north of the whole snowstorm.

But scared its a bit strong as I was only going about 20 mph tops.... intense yes because I didn't feel like having to pay some guy to tow me out of a snowbank.

But hey I love that stuff...adrenaline was flowing and I was in my element  ...on the one hand wanting to get past it, but on the other hand sadness when it was clear that the event was petering out in the Mid Hudson Valley.

I think it was summer of 2007, vacationing with my family on Lake Winnisquam in NH, we got caught in a severe thunderstorm/hailer/ high winds while out in the boat. We started for the house when the sky got dark but we were just too far out for the stupid 25 hp motor on the pontoon boat and we ended up on the north end of the lake when the storm hit and had about 5-10 minutes of the storm on top of us until we got to the dock. Easily the scariest weather situation I've faced, but lesson learned always have weather radio, or something to notify you when your out on a large body of water.

I've never had fear for my life in a winter storm but many situations plowing that scared the crap out of me like sliding sideways down hills, backwards, 360's, and the rest. That storm on the lake could have really been something that left a mark, however.

Microburst right over my house this summer... 60 dbZ radar returns with only occasional hail. Mets said wind was 80 mph but I've seen 80 before and that had to be at least 90, maybe even 100. Then again it could have been the extreme downpour that was making the wind seem stronger. And it was LITERALLY right over my house.

(1) Struck by lightning 1:30pm on 6/20/95. mind refuses to recall any details, I remember what felt like a bomb exploding.

(2) 100+mph winds in Bob. Sounds of damage crashes/falling debris, sirens, microbursts? Just a lot of scary **** to take in.

(3) caught driving home from work in 8/10/00 supercell. Somewhat scary with the extreme lightning , strong wind and golf ball size hail at 2am.

Can't imagine being struck by lightning. Where were you? Hospital involved?
