April is finishing with a mean temperature of 55.0° (1.3° above normal/2.0° above the earlier 1981-2010 baseline).

May will open with cooler than normal conditions. A shower is possible on Saturday as cooler air moves into the region. Sunday could be especially cool with highs only in the upper 50s to near 60° despite partly sunny skies. It could turn more springlike early next week with readings reaching the lower 70s on Tuesday and Wednesday. However the first 7-10 days of May will likely see temperatures average below normal overall.

The ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly was +1.5°C and the Region 3.4 anomaly was +0.7°C for the week centered around April 22. For the past six weeks, the ENSO Region 1+2 anomaly has averaged +1.47°C and the ENSO Region 3.4 anomaly has averaged +0.27°C. El Niño conditions will likely develop during late spring or early summer.

The SOI was -10.17 today. 

The preliminary Arctic Oscillation (AO) was +0.224 today.

Historical:

 

1852 - A tornado, following the same track as the famous "Tri-state Tornado" of 1925, struck the town of New Harmony IND. Just sixteen persons were killed by the twister, due to the sparse settlement. The "Tri-state Tornado" killed 695 persons. (David Ludlum)

 

1888: 246 people died in the world's deadliest hailstorm in India. Hailstones were reportedly the size of baseballs. 1600 domesticated animals at Moradabad perished.

 

1924: A significant tornado outbreak occurred from Alabama to Virginia on the 29 through the 30th. 26 tornadoes were of F2 intensity or greater. A total of 111 people were killed, and over 1,100 injured. An estimated F4 tornado tore through Steedman and Horrell Hill, SC. This tornado killed 55 people.

1953 - A tornado 300 yards in width leveled homes on the north side of Warner-Robins GA, and barracks on the south side of the Warner-Robins Air Force Base. (The Weather Channel)

1987 - Thunderstorms developing along a cold front produced severe weather in Idaho, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. Thunderstorms produced wind gusts to 100 mph in Lincoln, Mineral and Sanders counties. Twenty-three cities in the central and southeastern U.S. reported record high temperatures for the date. Memphis TN was the hot spot in the nation with a record high of 94 degrees. 1988 - A cold front produced high winds in the southwestern U.S. Winds gusting to 90 mph in southwestern Utah downed power lines, and damaged trees and outbuildings. 1989 - Thunderstorms produced severe weather in central and eastern Texas. Hail three inches in diameter was reported at Cool, and thunderstorm winds gusted to 80 mph at Hillsboro. 1990 - Late afternoon and evening thunderstorms produced severe weather in southern Virginia and the Carolinas, with tennis ball size hail reported southeast of Chesnee SC. Thunderstorms moving over the Chesapeake Bay flooded U.S. Highway 50 on Kent Island MD with several inches of water resulting in a seventeen-mile long traffic jam. 1994: Kaneohe Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii: It finally stops raining on the Kaneohe Ranch on the island of Oahu ending a streak of 247 consecutive days of rain which began 27 August 1993. (Ref. WxDoctor)

1996: All-time snow records fall around the Great Lakes in late snow: Cleveland, OH 101 inches, Marquette, MI 248.7 inches with a record 42 inches in April (Bob Ryan's 2000 Almanac)

1997: In the town of Fairview, IL several homes were damaged, with two people injured. In Middle Grove, the tornado destroyed two mobile homes and damaged 25 houses. The tornado then took an intermittent northeast path across Fulton, southeast Knox, western Peoria, and Stark Counties. Other tornadoes touched down in Macon, McLean, Adams, Hancock, and Montgomery Counties. Baseball sized hail fell at the Ballpark in Arlington, TX as the Texas Rangers played the Cleveland Indians. 2011: Chicago has its GLOOMIEST April ever! The frequent precipitation led to persistent cloud cover for much of April. According to Midway Airport observer Frank Wachowski`s monthly records of percentage of possible sunshine experienced was the cloudiest April on record with only 32 percent of possible sunshine.
