That's a great idea... I might do that too. You think the Afton Mtn overlook on 64 has enough elevation? Or need to be up in the park?

I’m up in nova for break right now so I’ll be on the north side of Shenandoah. I need to take a better look this evening but I’ll @ you. Though honestly i plan to nowcast using https://weather.cod.edu/satrad/?parms=local-W_Virginia-truecolor-24-0-100-1&checked=map&colorbar=undefined

and for you the Charlottesville airport has ceiling height (though not ceiling top).

I'll be using that and the HRRR/NAM soundings to try and figure that out. This morning in Ablemarle the saturated layer looked to end around 950mb so I would think 2000ft is enough.

Welcome to Seattle

Reason why I have no desire to live there. Or England for that matter. I just cannot do it anymore. Grew up in NW Ohio and left for a lot of reasons. One being a winter full of gray skies day after day.

I think what really is bad is a lot of the time areas within 20-30 miles around here are under full sun. As the gloom seems to be all stuck over this area and Northern Loudoun County. It is 52 and cloudy with 91 percent humidity. So cold, damp and gray. I feel like I need to double up on my Vitamin D pills just to have a sunny disposition.

ETA guess what just kind of came out… :sun: through the clouds but still will take it.

What sort of convection is it? Elevated I assume since the temp inversion near the surface

Yes, completely elevated, but the forecast soundings do indicate some instability for parcels originating well above the surface.

Pretty amazing short term forecast differences. 6z euro gets much of NoVA and southern MD into the low 70s this afternoon!! 12z 3k NAM is 15-20F colder!

Reality was sort of a blend? Wedge wasn’t as strong as the NAM suggested, but euro was too aggressive eroding it.

Are those thunder showers out west? Or just heavy rain?

There are lightning strikes to our west, and there is good agreement in guidance for convection this evening into the overnight for at least the northern half of the region.   Forecast soundings suggest enough instability for a continued threat of thunder.
