Out of curiosity, do you think that in our lives we will see another cold wave that rivals the likes of 1857 and 1934 or is that basically impossible with the current climate? The current record min at PVD is -17 in 1934. 1943 and 1976 came close though. I mean, we did see -9F at PVD in both 2016 and 2023 but before that, the last time it got that cold was back in the 80s. But will we ever see negative teens again in this area? I would've thought that with the warming climate we would've broken the all time highs from 1911 and 1975 by now but surprisingly that hasn't happened yet either.

BOS did -10° 3 years ago this Wednesday. I think that was the first time they did double digits below 0F since 1957.

But as for those yore top tier historical cold shots…those may be gone. The ones that bring sub zero temps to SNE in the afternoon or -10° up here…1855, 1857, 1917, 1933, 1934, 1943, etc. That next tier below like 2023 is still potent though.

I mean, is there any setup in todays climate that would even support getting those S tier record lows? PVD got to -13 in 1976 but even the 70s were significantly colder than todays climate. I remember the afternoon of January 21, 2019 only got up to 5F in PVD, but even that is super rare. I think what is more surprising to me though is the fact that even with a warming climate we havent had any heat waves that rival the all-timers like 1911 and 1975. It seems like the 70s had more extremes with both cold and heat for some reason. We just don't get that anymore.

VDay 2016 hit -9 as well. Time an anomaly like that 3 weeks earlier and you’re probably pushing -12ish. But the setup is similar to the A tier ones we’ve recently had…arctic cold centered more in the lower levels and delivered more from the N than the WNW. We just need them a little more potent when delivered. The urban centers have heat island effects too so that’s another hurdle to overcomes.

Yeah both VDay 2016 and Feb 4 2023 hit -9 at PVD which is the lowest in my lifetime and it's not even close. Jan 16 2004 hit -6 that's the next lowest. I would like to see a really potent cold wave with -15 to -20 at PVD but the odds of that happening don't seem especially good. I think we are more likely to get a 110-115F heat wave than break 1934 all time record low.

I'm not an alarmist or conspiratorial, but I can't understand how this isn't front and center on everyone's mind. Maybe I read too much in the last few days, but...

I'm finding it pretty difficult to care about weather right now.  Every crazy conspiracy (most) people laughed at is unfolding in reality right now.  The illuminati runs the world and everyone from politicians to Hollywood to tech to health care is bought and sold.  The world as we know (knew) is all a lie.  Not to mention the disgusting child & human rights violations.

It is time for either everyday people to work together to gut the house right down to the foundation, or for the ones in control to rain absolute hellfire down on us.  Either way, it is coming and it will be chaos.
