How far into this month can I get into this month without turning the heat on?

I play this game every year.  I try for October 15; not sure what my success vs failure in winning that date is on average.

I've had years where I could not make it ... like it was 48 in the place some dawn, with frost out there on the lawn, and yeah, the forecast was 64 for high but mmm. The house has a 'cold memory' when the sun's not exactly heating the house this late in the year.    One year ..I think it was 2009, my in-laws had ripening tomatoes and new yellow flowers on Thanks Giving as we toured their huge garden in cargo shorts weather.  I think I made it to early Dec that year ...

It was 57 in here this morning. I could have given the place a puff of heat but it feels weird to do that when it's going to be 80 from Saturday to next Wednesday ...

Air 31F, dewpoint 31F at 6am.
NWS forecast high is 61F, perfect weather for working outside!
BTW, I just got a solid lead on a very nice apartment here in Brattleboro, so move to Northampton is on hold indefinitely. It was getting a bit complicated anyway, may as well keep it simple...

Yes, totally. We kind of "acknowledged" each other when you moved up here a few years ago. I have lived here downtown since 2010, from Boston and Newton, Mass., born and raised, but have lived in a couple other cities over the years.

I don't usually post much, just OBS during winter, but have a little time off from work while I take care of moving, birthday last month, busy stuff that I don't have time to do while working (thanks, Boss! :)).

Anytime--coffee, BEER (ha), lemonade, whatever.

Edit, forgot emoji.

5 inches under for the 2025 water year

Our average water year is 48.89".  This recently ended one had 38.08", only 78% of the average.  2025 thru September is 7.13" BN and last October was 3.56" BN, giving the water year a dry start.

I keep thinking about they saying you've shared in the past about winter not starting until the swamps are filled.  If that's the case, winter is a looong way off up here.

Wow that cold?

yeah, unique little sandy valley....you could feel it as soon as the sun went down that it was going to radiate perfectly....clear and calm again tonight should yield  another round of mid 30s by sunrise, that and no return flow starting until after daybreak

Picked tomatoes and peppers today with more still growing/ ripening . With no cool in sight. Likely can go into Nov

Usually it's not a factor of temps, it's the amount of sunlight they get each day. Tomatoes usually stop producing viable new by mid-october.  Our peppers however have gone into early November, when we'll pick whatever is there; red, green, whatever, before the first hard freeze. We cover the plants if it's just going to be a light frost.

I’ve got a few with yellow flowers. So they’re still trying. But yeah.. sunlight is a big issue. They only get 2-3 hours max now vs 6-8 in summer . So growing much slower . I also aerated and overseeded large portion of lawn in early Septorcher.. so nothing like dragging sprinkler around in Octorcher . They also got the blight from the wet, humid summer so many of them I’ve been pulling limbs off since July
