What is the significance of terminating DoD satellite data? Will it affect forecasting?

https://www.upi.com/Science_News/2025/06/28/Defense-Department-ends-satellite-data-hurricane-experts/7881751141308/

Yes—and likely in a significant way.

Although there are other satellites that provide microwave data, losing these specific streams (which were delayed due to push back from folks within NHC/NOAA) will keep forecasters from being able to use microwave data in some instances to get a center fix or understand realtime changes occurring in a TC. Imagine what looks like a rapidly intensifying hurricane on our doorstep with recon six hours away, or a system that looks to be organizing at a faster clip or completing an eyewall replacement cycle. MW can get us real meaningful info when we need it.

Also, the quality just isn’t as good at times due to where the scans occur. There’s that too. Lol

General observation while in SW connecticut this weekend.   Son had a lacrosse tournament in Darien/New Canaan area.  Barring the extreme wealth and nearly every home probably having a well, overall its just much greener than Eastern mass.  We never get thunderstorms anymore.  Tuesdays threat looks like it stops in Worcester as does most threats.  Every summer we start off strong in the spring and then it turns into a dust bowl in EMA.   Lawns are complete toast here already.

Has eastern MA ever been a place where there have been a lot of thunderstorm?  Marine influence tends to modify most stuff that moves in from the West and Northwest directions.  I agree things have been drier but it doesn't seem like we are getting less thunderstorms than in the past, I feel like that's always been an interior New England thing, though I'm in E RI and not in E MA...

We’ve had some heavy rain events, but we seem to be lacking in storms recently. Lots of WAR type summers keeping the shortwaves to our northwest. Though his town had a heck of a storm about a year ago lol.

This comment is not political in any way shape or form.
Why is the General Public losing (already paid for) access to data? NOAA and the NWS is undergoing budget cuts.

SAD, so sad the day might come that the Commerce Dept. is defunded, no research and thus weakening predicting lifesaving events.
WTF is going on.

feels very warm to me.   86 to 89 at most home/non-official sites, enough en masse that combined with the sensible appeal out there ...it's legit.  With almost nill movement to the air and intense insolation, that's pushing it

It's been a great gradual increase in warmth/humidity through the day. Working outside and I've really felt this increase in the last few hours. The sweat slowly develops and you can feel yourself starting to stick to the leather chair all so slowly...its like applying a fine strip of super glue to a broken piece of glass. My shorts are that glue
