Today’s convection will be getting a boost from the forcing coming in ahead of the cold front later. I was more concerned with to much overturning of the atmosphere from yesterdays storms but we should have had plenty of time to recover.

Rtd208
Temps definitely running a little lower than yesterday so far at this time. Yesterday most places were already in the mid to upper 90’s.

There were a couple since then which were also very bad but not quite to that level 1993 had nine days of 100+ at Newark including five in a row in that particular heatwave. NYC had three days in a row of 100+ 1999 if I remember correctly had 2 heatwaves of 7+ days as did 2002. Haven't had any 7 day heatwaves at NYC since 2002. Tomorrow is the day that temps will be significantly cooler with highs in the mid 80s.

Models have a 3rd day approaching 100° today in NJ. The combination of steep gradient, Ambrose Jet, and strong to severe convection pressing in from the west will produce very strong southerly flow this afternoon. All the guidance show widespread 30-40 mph gusts near the South Shore beaches. Some of the higher resolution models like the HRRR and NAM 3km have gusts approaching 50mph at the beaches later. Very rough surf and dangerous rip currents so the lifeguards will probably limit access to the water as the winds pick up. Sorry, my error. Has this area seen Heat Index readings similar or equal to 1995? That was the worst heat I can ever remember. Large loss of life in Chicago. I believe HI readings around here topped out in the 115 degree range but I'm not sure. It was stiffing heat though. HI readings in the Mid-West topped out near 125 degrees.

bluewave
2 hours ago, LibertyBell said: we also need to see if we can get away from this southerly flow that keeps Long Island from having consistent 90s, it's very annoying to be the part of the tristate area that is missing out on this. It comes with the territory of living right near the ocean. Since 2010 to 2013 we haven’t seen that much deep westerly flow with our heat waves. Very strong onshore component to the winds during the warm seasons in recent times. JFK is just weeks away from its longest streak on record of not reaching 100°. But I am not sure if the ASOS was relocated back in the 90s making it more susceptible to sea breezes. So there can be a combination of factors at play here. The part of the airport near Ozone Park is several degrees warmer than where the ASOS is currently located in a marshy area next to Woodmere.
