January 17-18 Winter Storm

Recommended Posts

3.1” at O’Hare, similar downtown. The walk last night was great, felt more like an 8” storm with the drifting. Unfortunately the rain really ruined it

2.4" as of 1pm.

Yeah I just measured ~3.0". YYZ back to SN now.

Some decent returns near Kitchener. We'll see if they hold up as they move further north.

Storm reports within the last 24 hours. The number in Illinois with two digits after the decimal are rain reports. Apparently, the largest amounts of snow were near Lansing MI, and in northern Minnesota (not shown). The 8.2" near Monroe MI seems to be out of place, but it might be real.

Finished with 7.0" of snow, which was followed by sleet and rain. Has compacted to a DENSE 5.5" or so depth. Shoveling was a cardiac chore. Cars stuck and waterladen snowbanks everywhere. DTW had 6.8". As Stebo said, 5-8" call for SE MI was money, with a lot of reports in the 6-7" range.

Front has passed through. Dripping has stopped with the temp falling rapidly. Some concern as there is still a lot of ice on the trees that wind will cause issues later

On the plus side, the Magic Shell layed down by the ice will stop any blowing and drifting conditions.

Snow really coming down now. I'd estimate I've got about 4 or 5" down. Flake size is bigger now.

Probably close to 4" here.   Just shoveled the driveway and already re-covered.

Based on radar, finishing in the 5-7" range seems pretty much a lock.  Nice little mini-storm.

Well we ended up with almost nada for winter precip, wasn't expecting much but more than we got.   The freezing rain potential was destroyed by the high rain rates early this morning, (not complaining about that lol), we got roughly 1.25  liquid in this area.  Now back to your regularly scheduled frozen mud stalagmites  :pimp:

Just went to the store and shovelled rn. Measured 4.6" (11.7cm) as of 5 mins ago. Coming down nicely. Should hit 6".

Edit: YYZ at 4" as of 3pm.

YYZ up to ~5.2" as of 4pm.

Hearing reports of big flakes coming down near Kitchener as temps continue to rise. ~7" is not out of the question if the bands near Milton/Guelph hold up.

DTX has already put out a storm total map. I finished with 6.4” in the mid morning. Hope to get some squalls tonight that drop a little more.

Picked up about 10" since last night, had a brief band come though around 1:00 PM that was easily 2.5 - 3" per hour rates to bad it only lasted about 25mins.  LES has been ongoing the last couple hours, if we can stay in a WNW flow could see another 6-10" by tomorrow afternoon, but many models are showing the 850 to veer more NNW or even NE by late tonight - tomorrow.
