Many of you may know (or not know) but a tradition dating back to eastern days (maybe longer?) has been an NFL pick em contest run in the sports forum.  The schedule for each week is posted typically sometime on Tuesday and participants quote the post, bold the teams they think will win, predict a tiebreaker score for the Monday night game, and the weekly/season standings are then posted on Tuesday as well.  This contest is free.

However, last year we introduced a pay pick-em league.  This league is run using yahoo and at the end of the season the top 3 people win money (65% for 1st, 25% for 2nd, 10% for 3rd).  We are hoping to get as many people as possible to join...the more people the higher the payouts.  We will also be doing weekly winners with that payout all dependent on how many are signed up...but think $10 per week unless we have a ton of sign-ups.

Anyways if you're interested further details are in the pinned thread on the sports side...below is the link

The Euro has a rare Typhoon phase with the trough causing the typhoon to get pulled in from the East across Japan.

It's big news over there now.

http://the-japan-news.com/news/article/0003175970

Typhoon No. 10 formed to the east of Tokyo’s Hachijojima island on Aug. 19, according to the agency. It is said to be rare for a typhoon to emerge near Japan. The latest typhoon is forecast to travel southwest over the sea located south of Japan and come back like a boomerang.

As of 9 a.m. Friday, the atmospheric pressure at the center of the typhoon was 945 hectopascals with a maximum wind speed of 45 meters per second. This was much stronger than Typhoon No. 9 and Typhoon No. 11, which recently made landfall in Japan.

Typhoon No. 10’s “very unique movement,” as described by a spokesperson for the agency’s Forecast Department, was due to high pressures from east and west battling with each other over Japan, on top of relatively higher sea temperatures than usual.

That's typhoon Lionrock correct? (Great name for a typhoon) Why do they use a number system?

The GFS finally caved to the the Euro/UKMET and gets pulled west back into NE Asia. That is some impressive blocking ridge to the north forcing the phase.

The gfs looked super confused yesterday basically stalling the system or doing a small loop.

A first according to Tokyo broadcasting system

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-08-29/typhoon-lionrock-set-to-hit-japan-prompting-early-abe-return-isfhwsp9

Typhoon Lionrock is projected to make landfall in Japan Tuesday and is likely to strike the northern Tohoku region, the area devastated by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. It would be the first tropical cyclone to make landfall in the region since records began in 1951, broadcaster TBS said.

Historic heavy rains are expected in the region, with more rain forecast to fall in 24 hours than in a typical month of August, Tsumoru Matsumoto, the Japan Meteorological Agency’s chief forecaster, said in a televised press conference. Citizens were advised to be wary of "violent" winds and high waves near coastal areas, and the Cabinet office warned of the dangers of landslides and flooding from rivers bursting their banks.
