What a historic storm. One I will treasure forever. Do not be so quick to dig out tomorrow. When you go outside tomorrow to start shoveling/snow blowing take a step back, look around, take it all in. A storm like this is not easy to come by, believe me. There's been plenty of nice storms the last 20 years, even some historic ones, classics, but not many that can be mentioned in the same breath as 1996, so don't forget that and enjoy it all! Good night all!

I think as long as there isn't anymore inbound snow on radar, they should just measure it now. No point in waiting and letting the wind or settling mess up the final measurements.

That's actually the way they are supposed to do it.

Snowfall basically equals maximum depth during the storm.  You can wipe the board once per day, so snowfall can theoretically exceed maximum depth of new snow on the ground for storms that last longer than 24 hours.

Another poster who mentioned wiping the board every 90 minutes reported inflated totals.

Estimating 23 Montclair... We were neck and neck with the city but that epic band missed us to the south.

Wind and snow consistency stand out for me... And the fact that it was mainly daytime. But have seen heavier rates in several others.

Close to that here. Tough to get an exact measurement, but I'd say around 21". Managed to miss each of the heaviest bands either to the north, south, or west. The last band that hit that trained from east to west over the city went to my south. To me, this will be "The NAM Blizzard of 2016". I finished up in the 18-24" range and only ever expected 10-15" (and forecasts at that time were calling for only 6-10 or 8-12"). Though the snow rates probably did not exceed 1.5"/hour (MAYBE 2"/hour for a short time), this was a special storm, and it's not all about what happened in my own backyard. The extent of the snowfall and the areas that received 20"+ and even 30"+ is absolutely incredible, and tracking it was half the fun and excitement!!

People need to chill and wait for the 7:00am final measurement from NYC.

It 100% snowed enough to put them over the top after the measurement of 26.8"

NWS will adjust it, even if NYC doesn't properly record the extra .1-.2"

Excellent point and if they got it wrong n we break record those guys must retrained again

I get that a lot of people aren't fans of the fluke 2006 record, but I feel like if a record is going to be broken, it should be broken by at least an inch or 2. I'm actually pretty surprised they didn't crack 30 yesterday. It seems like it takes something even more anomalous than yesterday'storm to get those solid +30 amounts in the nyc area. DC and Boston have it a little easier in that respect.

Dulles (IAD) and Boston may have an easier time but seems that DCA struggles with getting higher amounts as well.
