Albernaz back for 2027 per Elias... Mancini to retire

Mike Elias, Baltimore's president of baseball operations, said Saturday that Albernaz would return in 2027. The Orioles are 75-79 in Albernaz's first season and began the day three games out of an American League wild-card spot.

"It's a great vote of confidence," Albernaz said. "Obviously, this season hasn't gone the way I wanted it by any stretch, by how the players wanted the season to go, how the front office, how the fanbase. ... That's something I wear pretty heavily because of the seat I'm in and I don't take that lightly."

In addition, Trey Mancini signed a one-day contract to retire with the Orioles, the franchise he played for during the bulk of his eight-year career in the majors.

And yet Elias and Albernaz are both back next year.

Albernaz being back I get--I looked up what other rookie managers were fired after Year 1 and couldn't find much! It is just not something MLB teams do very often (if at all). All managers like that historically get a second year. I think he's out if we miss the playoffs again next year.

But Elias? Bruh...we finally got new ownership that spends more and let's the GM be the GM...but now Rubenstein is getting fooled by this dude, smh Two consecutive last place finishes under two different managers and he gets to keep his job? Dude has nine lives. If it happens again next season...what's gonna be the excuse? Shouldn't be any...but who knows? Smh

Do some research. So much info from many outlets on this. Let AI help you. It isnt difficult to see why there could be a prolonged lockout/cancellation of a significant part of the season given the division over a hard cap ceiling/floor and revenue sharing between owners and players. Always about money, and both sides are dug in.

I'm not sure you even realize when you condescend/talk down to people, man...smh Telling me (or making assumptions about) what I have and haven't read? Lol Like wut?

Now to the point...just because I don't think it costs an ENTIRE season doesn't mean I haven't read and am not aware of what it is going on--I am. He said "they won't play next season" like it won't be any season at all. There are differing opinions in the baseball world on how long i some execs think some games will be played, and I happen to share that opinion for now.

I know how dug in both sides are and what the division is about. But an entire season is hard to fathom...although the stoppage in the 90s did cost the rest of that season. Had it come at the beginning of the year who knows?But imo...MLB is gonna have to give in eventually...the players will not budge on a cap. How long that takes is debatable but not a sure thing they won't play at all.

Rubenstein is mainly concerned about real estate development around the ballpark. He could change the front office, spend a little money, and make this team legit contenders. But being mediocre still makes him money. Lots of money.

I grew up in the 80s, wrote my first program on a Commodore 64, got a BS/MS in computer science and work for one of the big tech companies. I am frankly ashamed at the current direction of tech and tech companies. Capitalism has sucked the soul out of it. I am glad I can retire/quit in a couple years. 

AI is yet another tool that can be utilized for good and bad. I don't like how we are shoving it down people's throats to use (Gemini auto installed on phones, Copilot invading every MS product etc). I am also seeing the bad effects of technology in the learning environment. My kids don't have textbooks. Everything is on the computer and they are glued to it. My kids aren't on social media and we place strict rules on the phones, and they have begrudgingly accepted. It doesn't help that 80% of their peers have what seems like unlimited access to phones and social media, so my kids sorta feel left out. 

Back to your question, I don't think you have to be worried about an end of the world / machines takeover the planet / Matrix / Terminator scenario. You should be concerned about information flow, propaganda, influence, and control/use of data. Everyone worried about the NSA monitoring you should really be worried about big business data mining you. Things like Flock etc. Not much you can do to prevent it, unless you want to build a remote bunker in the middle of nowhere and go off the grid. 

Sorry for the "get off my lawn" rant (I'm only 45!). I'm glad my kids are not super interested in tech and seem to like animals/agriculture/home improvement.

I’ll say this. These things are really weird — look at the hugging face transcripts — and they seem to be capable of things like solving Millennium math problems. There’s no guarantee that they keep getting smarter or better able to affect the real world, but they’re already extremely good at hacking, and all the predictions about slowing down haven’t happened yet. Moreover, at a minimum, there are real worries that these things may be able to empower bad actors with respect to hacking or, significantly more serious, biowarfare. I would say the smart version of the argument is that this is a leap into the unknown, and nobody’s sure where it ends up. Saying p(doom) = .1 or whatever is just a way of expressing this uncertainty.

I'VE been really disappointed with Rubenstein. If we're running it back with Elias and Albernaz then why would anyone expect better results? Elias has had 8 years and when he declared lift off we've had back to back last place finishes.

Albernaz is in over his head. I don't think giving him another year will make a difference. ( I hope he proves me wrong) 

How many bites at the apple does a GM get? It's just ridiculous.

An interesting question in the intermediate term is whether our online society will become a bit less online.  If AI tools become too good at hacking, do we need to reorient the ways of doing business such that they are no longer always online.  Instead of killing us all, do we end up back in 1990?

I agree with this. I am agnostic as to what harm ai will cause at this point, but I’d say the warning signs are flashing bright red.  And I’d prefer to just err on the side of caution.  In general I think experimenting with something that almost immediately gets deployed society and world wide should be done in the most cautious way possible.  TBH I don’t even want ai so any kind of societal collapse risk either from bad actors or rogue AI’s is enough for me to say let’s just stop entirely until we figure out if this is safe.
