And just like that canceled.  However, the KCXX is practically useless for low-level scans in its E quadrant, so you have to wonder.

The VT laws not allowing certain towers on hills/mountains, that is what I think prevented the KCXX radar from being placed properly when built 30 years ago.  If it is, it is stupid law b/c these radars were installed to protect lives and property, and the biggest selling point when we upgraded to the WSR-88D was tornado detection!

Yeah but think of the trees.

Absolutely correct. 5 days in a row in fact. Weirdly still ended up below normal. Concord...

We had the hot period right around this time, but I also had ten days with highs in the 70s, one day in the 60s, and thirteen days with lows below 55° when the avg low is 59 at BDL  on 8/31.

Last summer was the first time in recent memory that we basically turned the page August 1. It was strange but lasted for a while as we know.

Nothing like that this summer.

A warm start to fall isn’t a bad way to live at all in New England. Now, if November is a torch…

If my memory serves me correct, I believe temps took a noticeable trend downwards after one final surge in mid August. I suppose it depends on what part of the region people are from too. For me, as long as the air still has that summery “feel” to it and am able to squeak out a few more good beach or fishing trips, then I’m a happy camper. Let’s hope for the best, dew and coc enthusiasts alike!

Man useless is a great way to describe it. When I’m out in SLK or traveling up there I don’t even bother with it.

Really? Mansfield has all sorts of radio and TV towers on it.  There are wind farms on some ridgelines.

I always thought they were just lazy and installed it at the airport and got what they got for radars coverage.

The composite and 2.5 degree scans are decent as they clear the ridgelines.  But yeah, over me the radar is hitting at 6,000ft up.  Not ideal for tornados lol.

The 2.5 degree scan though gets over the terrain enough to provide a picture.

Yes, I did know about Mt Mansfield, but I was thinking some towers were grandfathered in when new laws were passed? Also, when the WSR-88Ds were being installed, you had push back in some areas thinking these radars were a radiation hazard. I am not kidding!

When the WSR-88D were installed, the NWS planned things right.  That's why OKX is in over cntrl LI, b/c the former WSR-57 was right in NYC, and the ground clutter was horrendous!   Out West, the put a number of radars on top of mountains b/c otherwise they would have been worse than even KCXX for coverage!  So I do not think it was the NWS being lazy at all here.

They took care to try to place all radars within 50 mi of the largest city in the CWAs for low-level mesocyclone detection.  Again, this was the biggest selling point and upgrade from the former radars, so not having 0.5 BREF and VEL is a big deal.

Glad it works for someone

Some pretty good pop ups over WXW2. Great year for storms up that way.

I always thought KMPV would have been a great spot for a radar installation that covered east of the spine and northern NH.

You learn to look for the signals in the radar, ha.  Years of comparing ground truth to the various layers of echoes.  0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5 degrees all tell a story, but it’s not as much fun as having a great low level scan.

It’s part of the mystic though… not as easy to just glance and assume what’s going on at ground level.

It’s a truly beautiful thing in winter, when light low level scans can be enough to produce 3-6” of powder. If it looks like a summertime line is coming, watch out.

That would've been great for interior Vermont... the picture for east of the Spine would be amazing with a radar site at MPV.

Given the high terrain in northern New England, there really is no best spot.  Ideally you'd have one east of the Spine, plus in the Champlain Valley, and another in the St Lawrence Valley... no matter the site, there are going to be limitations because of the terrain.  Even if you put the radar site on Mount Mansfield, the beam is starting 4,000+ feet above the ground... when that beam will sample areas around it, the height will likely be even higher.  Either way you are sampling 6,000ft+ in a lot of areas.

And crab grass.

The cold weather grasses don’t stand a chance on lawns around here.

much of seacoast doesn’t know managing landscapes well and boy it shows in this warmer climate

Looks like a beautiful stretch of weather into the extended. Summer as it should be.

Nearly missing an intense heat burst through the center of the CONUS as we watch it get deflected underneath.

Not sure I'd celebrate that...  not yet anywho -

It's likely to go down that way. However, there's still some potential for a warmer correction N-NE; that the models may be too suppressed.  The NAO was western limb orient/negative; so, a summer polar branch, albeit seasonally weak, being S in Canada made sense while that was taking place.  The NAO is in a state of transitioning into a positive mode, though. The canonical expectation is that heights should rise and the flow becoming more zonal across SE Canada.   It's unclear if the guidance et al are handling that in the 120 range.  A tendency to hang too much suppression over the top of that "heat dome" expression cannot yet be ruled out.   [edit, there's actually two pulses... 100 thru 120 ...then again out around D9/10;  which could all merge - again - if there's any correcting]

As far as the heat goes ...that looks impressive to me.  582+ hydrostats ( actual water integrated heights) means at minimum there's likely to be some massive DP ballooning S of the stationary boundary where ever that aligns. Right now it's roughly Chicago to NJ somewhere.  The 850 mb index finger metric temp is 20C+ throughout, so that's likely mid 90 to 100 over 76ers.   Yuck.  Could be just as impressive as any heat anomaly we've seen in the CONUS this summer, despite being post solar max too.

I'll tell you though ... that whole situation

 image.png.d84d42a22d1e8b7704f3733c37f26157.png

... looks like a breeding ground for MCS traffic.  There's QPF modeled around the Lakes ...but as it stands now, if the guidance is right about the overall synoptic structure they're likely to dive before they get this far E.   Tuesday morning Quarter Backing

While I would never trade instant information for the old days it does make the world a little smaller. Back in the day if I wanted to know who opened for The Pretenders at the Orpheum in 1996 I would call my friend Bill. I never talk to Bill anymore...

Perhaps Bill is posting concert dates and set lists from the 1990's online and in a weird kind of way you guys are still really close.
