The VT laws not allowing certain towers on hills/mountains, that is what I think prevented the KCXX radar from being placed properly when built 30 years ago. If it is, it is stupid law b/c these radars were installed to protect lives and property, and the biggest selling point when we upgraded to the WSR-88D was tornado detection! I suppose it depends on what part of the region people are from too. For me, as long as the air still has that summery “feel” to it and am able to squeak out a few more good beach or fishing trips, then I’m a happy camper. Mansfield has all sorts of radio and TV towers on it. There are wind farms on some ridgelines. I always thought they were just lazy and installed it at the airport and got what they got for radars coverage. The composite and 2.5 degree scans are decent as they clear the ridgelines. But yeah, over me the radar is hitting at 6,000ft up. Not ideal for tornados lol. Yes, I did know about Mt Mansfield, but I was thinking some towers were grandfathered in when new laws were passed? Also, when the WSR-88Ds were being installed, you had push back in some areas thinking these radars were a radiation hazard. I am not kidding! When the WSR-88D were installed, the NWS planned things right. That's why OKX is in over cntrl LI, b/c the former WSR-57 was right in NYC, and the ground clutter was horrendous! Out West, the put a number of radars on top of mountains b/c otherwise they would have been worse than even KCXX for coverage! So I do not think it was the NWS being lazy at all here. They took care to try to place all radars within 50 mi of the largest city in the CWAs for low-level mesocyclone detection. Again, this was the biggest selling point and upgrade from the former radars, so not having 0.5 BREF and VEL is a big deal. 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

That would've been great for interior Vermont... the picture for east of the Spine would be amazing with a radar site at MPV. Given the high terrain in northern New England, there really is no best spot. Ideally you'd have one east of the Spine, plus in the Champlain Valley, and another in the St Lawrence Valley... no matter the site, there are going to be limitations because of the terrain. Even if you put the radar site on Mount Mansfield, the beam is starting 4,000+ feet above the ground... when that beam will sample areas around it, the height will likely be even higher.
