For those who are complaining about the cold try working on a barge or on the dock on the Hudson today. Today my men were on the dock for 45 min trying to tie up the barge and offload to it. Unfortunately with the strong winds and ice the vessel had trouble getting close enough to the dock. Eventually they were successful.

.

Agree.  Dock workers or anyone who has to work outside in this.  Terrible.  I could never do it.

You don't want it to get this cold. Why would you want that? What's the purpose?

Kill all the dam mosquitoes and a lot of the ticks... why would anyone want warmth! It only breeds! Cold kills.

It's getting dangerous upstate.

The power outage in the Village of Watkins Glen is due to an overload of the system believed to be from increased demand due to extreme temps. Village Electric is asking that everyone turn off unnecessary lights and other electrical items that may be causing a load to the system. Also you are being asked to limit electric heat to only what is needed to directly stay warm. If everyone can do their part the system may be restored. Please share and inform anyone who may not see this post. In the mean time the Watkins Glen Fire Department is opened for a warming station if its needed. The direct number there is 607-535-7700 and if no answer please call the Sheriffs Office and speak to an Emergency Service Dispatcher at 607-535-8222.

Fun fact

Lake Erie is nearly 96% frozen as of Thursday. With this weekend's Arctic blast, it could reach 100% coverage. The last time this happened was 30 years ago in February 1996 and has ocurred only 3x in modern history.

I am surprised that there is not ice on LI Sound.  Last time that I saw that was February 1979 during the week prior to PD1.

There is lots of ice on the protected bays and harbors on the Sound shore

The old windchill figures always seemed overdone,  but the modern figures seem underdone...

I’ve never sure how it was ever figured out how -30 for example “feels” like in the old and new way. Or on the other hand how 110 feels like. I guess they have to assign a number to how dangerous extreme cold like this or heat is and how humidity and wind speed worsen it.

I read this earlier this winter. It's old so I will probably look for a better source later before bed.
