How is it looking for the weekend? Core of the cold still western New England into NY?

Yes, still going to be frigid, just not as bad as it looked earlier in the week... Core is north and west, not directly over us.. It will feel worse with the wind and after the thaw Monday through today

December and January were below normal in based on the most recent 30 year period but how do they compare to the previous period?

For BOS 30 year periods back to when they started gathering the data at Logan:

  Dec Jan
1941-1970 32.9 29.0
1951-1980 33.5 29.2
1961-1990 33.5 28.7
1971-2000 34.7 29.3
1981-2010 35.0 29.3
1991-2020 36.0 30.2
2025/2026 31.3 28.8

So December was colder than any 30-year climate period, and January was colder than any climate period but 1961-1990 (colder by 0.1°). Feb will need to torch the end of the month to be much above!

Thanks!  This is exactly what I was wondering and I didn't know I had worded my question correctly.

Winds really cranked this afternoon here with a biting feel out there .
25.5

Amazing what a little wind can do to change the tenor of the outdoor feel...  Almost the same temp as yesterday right now, but with a steady 12 mph wind, gusting to 25 mph... The walk around the neighborhood was nowhere near as comfortable as it was yesterday!

This winter has been relatively boring for me, given I was abroad for the only significant snowfall.

That said, the retention of this pack is fantastic, the best I've seen since 2015. Once I smashed through the crust I have a couple nice tracks through the cemetery and am able to cross country ski two weeks after the snowfall, and will be able to for the foreseeable.

Sledding hills have been taken for granted and are mostly empty.

Today was gorgeous for cross country.

Which is why this weekend will feel so much worse than any "fake" cold

Gusts 50-60mph
